2013 NFL Draft: New England Patriots spotlight – CBSSports

2013 NFL Draft: New England Patriots spotlight – CBSSports

The only drawback with that for this year is they only have five total picks, perhaps the byproduct of so many previous draft-day deals, so there ability to manipulate the draft board might not be as great as it’s been in the past. Either way, the Patriots will be among the major players as they look to fill a variety of needs. Often, their best picks have come in the later rounds, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do in the second and third.

Breaking Down a First-Down Fix for the Patriots Defense

Breaking Down a First-Down Fix for the Patriots Defense

This is a column from a couple of weeks ago that reflects a lot of my thinking headed into the draft as to which positions can most help the defense. It comes down to sacrificing some run-stopping focus to be better against the pass, especially in base defense.

29 JOHN CYPRIEN FS FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Cyprien has zoomed up the charts faster than almost any other prospect in recent weeks. He’s good in coverage and also against the run – which is very important.

2013 NFL Mock Drafts : NFL Mock Draft: Jets move up for Milliner

Don’t really see it, like the player but are they really going to carry six safeties? So you pencil in Gregory being cut, and assume Tavon was a huge second round miss? Wouldn’t rule out the Gregory part of it, but I don’t think they’ll take a safety, especially not in the first.

Tavon Wilson Patriots Highlights 2013 (by MorinIsland34)

Thanks to @OliverBThomas for sending this video my way. Great flashback when even Mike Mayock was stumped by the Patriots’ selection of Tavon Wilson. I think a lot of people underestimate Wilson, but he should have every chance to start at safety this year.

Just two more days till the draft, and I don’t know about you guys but I’ve got a heavy case of draft fatigue. In the past it would set in a lot sooner, when you just become overwhelmed by the number of mock drafts and potential Pats that your head is spinning.

Should be an exciting weekend as it always is with a Pats. Probably some trade downs, maybe some player trades, but ultimately the Pats will have some new player to speculate about and over-analyze.

My take on Spikes is that there are other contractual issues that would jump ahead of it, and I’d personally let at least half the year play out before exploring it. The reason is that I’d want more information (i.e. Is he healthy? Are his skills improving?) before committing significant future dollars to him. I also consider this: When the Patriots traded up in the first round to select Hightower in 2012, they didn’t do it because they viewed him as a two-down player. He should be on the field on third down based on where he was selected. I think he will be and it’s just finding the role that maximizes his talent. On the coverage linebacker on the whole, I think it’s one of those things that would be nice to have but it’s not mandatory. Similar to you, I like the idea of them playing more dime with either Wilson (Adrian, Tavon) in a linebacker-type role this season. The hope is that you’re strong enough against the run in doing so and don’t get run over like the Bills did when they played almost exclusively a dime package in the first meeting versus the Patriots last year.

Predicting the Patriots PUP’ers

The first buzz kill of a new Patriots season is always which guys open up camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. While players can come off the list at any time, and oftenit is just a case of not passing a physical and/or conditioning test, it puts a damper on things to not […]
