Yes, the New England Patriots used the majority of their draft picks on defenders for the second year in a row – and an improved defense will be critical to the team’s championship hopes – but if there’s one area that is sure to excite the team’s fans, it’s the potential for what the dynamic Dobson/Boyce duo might bring to the offense. It’s new. It’s exciting. And, perhaps above all else, it’s intriguing. While the Patriots have drafted and developed rookies into immediate contributors at other positions, this is the first time they’re making such an authoritative effort to do so at receiver, a position in which they normally rely on veterans.

Breaking down where the picks might fit for the Patriots – Patriots – Boston.com

Great breakdown with insight into each pick and where they might find themselves playing…

Hate all of the negativity surrounding the WR picks online. While this may be the few tainting the majority, I recall numerous fans campaining for us to draft a true X receiver, or a deep threat, or an outside guy with speed. Dobson is 6 3 and runs a 4.4, Boyce is 5’11 but runs a 4.34-4.38. Both of these guys have the speed and the talent to play outside and go deep. Why the complaining? I think both of these guys will fit in GREAT, and at least 1 will be an immediate contributor. If as a WR 3/4

Oh you don’t have to explain it to me, I agree, these two WRs are perfect. But what I learned a long time ago is that many people like to unload their negativity on their sports team, and that’s okay.

But for those complaining about the draft you have to wonder where they’ve been for the last decade. This is how the Pats have been doing things for a long time. They build a team, they don’t just collect talent. I know thats hard for people to understand, but having a group of guys all pulling in the same direction, who all love the game with equal passion, is a lot more poweful than just taking what the experts perceive as the most talented players available.

So the patient, rational fan thing to do is to give these guys a chance and see how it all comes together. Draft picks aren’t precious. Bill Belichick really doesn’t care what his draft pick success rate is, or will be at the end of his career. They’re attempts to add players who fit and can help the team. We can save the judgement for a few years down the road, and even then, if the Patriots are still winning there won’t be much to complain about, just like there really isn’t much to complain about now.

In what has become a yearly tradition, Fitzy’s impact was heard (or read) around the world in this edition, with the cries of “Butt Fumble!” echoing all the way to ESPN’s twitter feed. Another classic!

townienews:

At long last, she has arrived – Fitzy Goes To The 2013 NFL Draft. And it’s every bit as Buttfumbleriffic as you’d hoped it’d be (mildly NSFW, as one might imagine and hope it to be).

TJ Moe, WR, Missouri (5114 – 204 – 4.60) Moe is probably the best of the UDFA signing of the bunch thus far. I was mildly surprised he didn’t get drafted in the later rounds. Lack of straight speed is what likely dropped Moe into the UDFA ranks. It’s going to be impossible for him to avoid being compared to Wes Welker. Moe isn’t fast, but he had one of the best 3-Cone times at the NFL Combine (6.53), displaying his elite quickness and sudden change of direction. Moe is ultra-reliable and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line to make catches.

Just wanted to say LOVE the Collins and Dobson picks. Collins was touted as some as one of the top 3 coverage LBers in this draft along with Sio Moore and Arthur Brown. And with his speed, fluidity, and athletic ability combined with his history at S and MLB that surely seems possible. However, he’s also played OLB and hand in the dirt 4-3 DE. Where do you see Collins? Coverage MLB? sub-package DE? 3-4 OLB? 4-3 SAM+4-3 DE almost like Ninkovich? Or maybe all of the above? Top reserve atafewspots?

That’s a great question, and I don’t think even BB has the answer. He certainly has a skill set that would give you some options. But as BB says, they’ll see what he can do and figure out how he best fits the puzzle. But any time you can add an explosive athlete he should be able to help.

Can a Butler Do It Again for Patriots?

Adam Butler, an unsigned rookie free agent defensive linemen out of Vanderbilt, has turned heads in the last week of Patriots training camp. Saturday’s scrimmage had him showing up in quite a few reports: One name to keep an eye on: rookie DT Adam Butler. Continues to see reps with Flowers/Wise in sub defense packages. […]
