Patriots WR vs D Line Drafts History

May 10, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Mike D. Note: Today we’re bringing you a submission from a reader who has done a breakdown of the comparison between the Pats drafting of wide receivers and defensive lineman. Interesting stuff. I always think draft criticism is stupid. Which teams hit on all picks? All I care about is winning games. You don’t get extra points for being a flawless drafter, which of course no one is. As always, if you have something Pats related you want to get off your chest, submit it to us, and if we like it, we’ll post it.

Hey Mike,

I’ve been excited about the possibilities at WR next year after reading the scouting reports on both Dobson and Boyce but have been met by skepticism by many saying “BB doesn’t know how to draft WR’s”- and throwing out names like Taylor Price and Bethel Johnson.

I actually disagree and believe the Pats have just not valued the position and therefore haven’t invested a great amount of premium picks or picks in general. I see no reason Dobson/Boyce can’t be their new Hernandez/Gronk Ridley/Vereen way of addressing a position of need. I actually think the WR’s they’ve drafted were pretty good consideringwhere they were picked.

To put my theory to the test I went back and compared the WR’s drafted throughout the BB era to a position they have invested in and done relatively well, the D line. I think the results show that they have actually done better at WR in rounds 2-7, and the stud D line picks were a result of investing 1st round selections.

Here they are………..

How Aaron Dobson Compares to Randy Moss

For Friday’s B/R piece we’re taking a look at Dobson and Moss’ Marshall careers, and how a comparison to Troy Brown might be more realistic.

The big thing I’d say we look for, which would try to differentiate the players for us, are players with passion; guys that really love football. As we all know from our jobs, if you love what you’re doing you don’t feel like you’re working. If you don’t like what you’re doing, then every step of the way is just painful torture. We don’t want people who are in football because of the lifestyle it brings or the opportunities [or rewards] from it. We want people who are in our business because they love doing it.

[Aaron Dobson] was a very good second-round pick by the Patriots. Dobson is faster than departed veteran Brandon Lloyd; he should be able to step in for Lloyd and make an immediate impact on New England’s passing game. The Marshall product was the best receiver at the Senior Bowl and dazzled at his pro day (running the 40-yard dash in 4.42 and 4.44 seconds). He boasts very good hands and big-play ability. One could make a highlight reel out of the catches he made against East Carolina in 2011 and Purdue last season. He should also help out on special teams.

One thought on Harmon is that while he may not play extensively on defense in 2012, the Patriots don’t have an established strong safety of the future besides him on the roster. Adrian Wilson and Gregory are both in their 30s, and Tavon Wilson could be viewed as a free safety option. Harmon doesn’t project to be a consistent playmaker in the back half of the field, but he’s a tough, physical player who can be reliable as a developmental option.
