Eleven things to watch at New England Patriots training camp – ESPN Boston

Eleven things to watch at New England Patriots training camp – ESPN Boston

Great stuff in this one, including my favorite topic:

Gone are the days of a surplus of big, physical defensive linemen; in its place is an overflow of hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end types in the 250- to 270-pound range. This was highlighted by 2013 top draft pick Jamie Collins, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound linebacker/defensive end from Southern Mississippi, who was selected 52nd overall. What it all means remains to be seen, as the Patriots still could employ the 4-3 base defense that they mostly played last year, or perhaps there will be a shift to more of a 3-4 type of front to play to the strengths of the hybrid numbers on the roster. At the least, there should be more athleticism in the team’s sub packages, and that’s where more of the game is being played these days (57 percent for the Patriots in 2012). Scheme tweaks bear watching in camp.

If you think this turbulent offseason portends a decline on the field for the New England Patriots … well, frankly, you need a history lesson. No team in the NFL, and maybe in the history of sport, has dealt better with controversy. Issues that would have caused other teams to curl up in a thumb-sucking fetal position have been followed by some of the Patriots’ greatest successes. The entire Bill Belichick-Tom Brady dynasty—three Super Bowl titles, two other Super Bowl appearances and nine seasons with at least 11 victories since 2001—was launched on controversy.

Peter King’s new MMQB site is a go, and with it comes Greg Bedard’s piece on the Pats and their turbulent offseason. Nice to have him back.

Ninkovich played 1,076 defensive snaps in 2012, but was flagged for just one penalty (a three-yard flag for encroachment) on the year. It represents the lowest penalty total on the roster of anyone who played at least 600 defensive snaps.

Great stuff here from Christopher Price, really breaking down one of the areas that will have a new look this season.

Pats release Donald Jones

July 19, 2013 by Mike Dussault

A little bit of a surprise, especially just a week before camp starts, but I love it. Been saying all along I’d rather they just go for it with the group of rookies that they have. This also could mean that some of those rooks who were banged up might be ready to go, like Dobson, Boyce and Harrison. This is going to be a fascinating area to watch in camp.

The #Patriots are releasing WR Donald Jones, I’m told. They want to get their young guys reps. He’ll go on waivers.

A Look Back: Tom Brady’s House of Horrors

The Patriots loss in the 2005 AFC Divisional game was one of the seminal moments of my Patriots fandom/obsession. It was at that moment we finally saw Bill Belichick and Tom Brady lose a playoff football game together, and it suddenly dawned on me that there would be a finite end to their dominance. There […]
