The Patriots affixed small cameras to the helmets of each of their quarterbacks for practice, something they’ll use to study the film later in the day. In addition, a ladder was placed in the end zone for a member of the video staff to stand atop and follow each of the quarterbacks in their movements during team drills.

Aaron Dobson started the day well in receiving drills, exhibiting excellent body control along the sideline and strong hands. His route-running looks improved as well, sharp cuts and smooth hips while playing against air. Dobson started slow in live action, not earning a target in the first set of 7v7 drills, but finished strong. He made five catches on six targets, the lone miss coming on a fantastic interception from Alfonzo Dennard. Dennard stayed in phase on Dobson’s “go” route and was able to high-point the ball and come down with the pick.

It’s clear that things are very fluid at this point at tight end. Ballard continues to get more and more reps at tight end, and looks a little smoother and more fluid than he did this spring during minicamps. Daniel Fells is part of the regular rotation, and Michael Hoomanawanui got consistent reps at both tight end and fullback. In addition, Zach Sudfeld continues to stand out because of his size and the fact that he doesn’t appear to be too overwhelmed by much.

Dobson was among the standout players, showcasing the impressive catch radius that made him a productive receiver at Marshall. He brought in one of the highlight catches of the day on a throw from Tom Brady that came over cornerback Aqib Talib.

So far it sounds like the rotation at LB has been Mayo-Spikes-Hightower to start, then Collins comes in, Spikes goes out and Hightower shift to MLB.

Practice observations: Alfonzo Dennard shines, Aaron Dobson breaks through

Really hearing everything we’d hope to hear so far after two practices. Rookie receivers are in the mix and flashing.

Brady really zeroed in on Aaron Dobson, and the two connected on at least four really nice passes, including one rep when Dobson sat between the safeties and another when he snagged a tough pass over Aqib Talib on the right sideline.

Alfonzo Dennard was back with the starting defense and had a terrific day. He intercepted a jump-ball pass down the right sideline from Ryan Mallett to Josh Boyce. It was the type of pass that would draw a pass interference penalty. Dennard also broke up a Brady pass for Dobson on the left sideline.
