Keeping in mind where Mallett was last year in training camp, the 2012 regular season and this past offseason seem to have really paid off in his development. As for Tebow, it’s always important to remember what he is (a movement quarterback with uncommon ability to make something happen on the fly), rather than what he isn’t (a traditional drop-back passer). He’s steadily shown improvement in his decisiveness, appearing more comfortable by the day.

[E]ven with the spring already under their belt, the Patriots are still looking at just about everyone in an effort to put Brady in the position to drive the franchise to its fourth championship.

Tom Brady, New England Patriots still catching up on offense – NFL.com

Makes sense. Unpredictable and inconsistent, but hopefully explosive.

It seems clear that the tight end centric offense is not going to be as valuable going forward. With Doobson, Boyce, Amendola, and Edelman looking good (when healthy) do you see a dramatic rise in four and give receiver sets coming???

I think the two-TE offense was more a function of playing to their strengths, just like this year’s will be. They’ll never try to force an offense that doesn’t fit the players they have. So I do think we’ll see more 11 personnel than 12 personnel, but it will depend on the opponent. They’ll still have decent size up front, especially when Gronk gets back, if they need to lean on a power running game with two-TEs.

The biggest difference I see is that they won’t be able to go into their blitzkreig no-huddle like they could with four experience weapons like the had they last two seasons. The offense will be a little more conventional, but hopefully a little more explosive downfield as well.

Fourth straight session of 1-on-1s – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Fourth straight session of 1-on-1s – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

It’s getting a little steamy in here…

Standout performers DE Marcus Benard – One rush stands out; he lines up over the outside shoulder of guard Chris McDonald (3 technique), which is different for a 6-foot-2, 260-pound end, and proves too quick at the snap as he surges through with relative ease. In addition, Benard’s first rep while aligned on a wide split at defensive end features high-impact contact with right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, as Vollmer gets his hands on Benard but Benard attempts to spin free to the inside. A real good matchup, with Benard’s explosion and Vollmer’s power meeting head on. Benard continues to get after it, later looping around fellow end Jason Vega in 2-on-2 combination work to apply some pressure.

It looks like Marcus Benard is coming on strong as a depth DE. Its likely that the Pats will have to jettison 1 or 2 (or both) former high draft picks in Cunningham and Bequette. Who stays, who goes?

August 2, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Justin Francis is in that mix too. Tough to say now of course, a lot can change over the next few weeks after games and more practices. I am struggling though wondering if they do keep 6 defensive ends.

Cunningham can do a number of different things and is more proven than Bequette or Francis, albeit not by much. Bequette is sounding more and more like an edge rusher and potential special teamer. Not impossible that wins him a roster spot, but he still needs to develop his pass rush skills, and doesn’t look suddenly able to chip in 5-7 sacks.

So we’ll have to let it play out, and see if Michael Buchanan makes any noise either as he gets more reps.

Who would be your front 5/6 in nickel/dime?

August 2, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Whoever you are, I love you for asking this.

Here’s what it looks like I think (and this is speculation, I haven’t seen any camp practices in person):

Heavy Nickel

Ninkovich-Kelly-Wilfork-Jones

Mayo-Hightower

Talib-Arrington-Dennard

McCourty-A. Wilson

Rush Nickel

Ninkovich-Wilfork-Benard-Jones

Collins-Mayo

Talib-Arrington-Dennard

McCourty-A. Wilson

Dime

Ninkovich-Wilfork-Jones-Benard

Mayo

Talib-Arrington-Dennard

McCourty-Gregory-A.Wilson

Of course there are plenty of variations around these, depends on what you’re looking for. My concern areas is again having Wilfork extensively in sub, ideally Armstead comes back and could be a viable dime option. Kelly is viable rotation option for Wilfork in any of the subpackages as well.

Otherwise I think Collins, Gregory, Tavon Wilson, and even Logan Ryan could be involved in sub in some capacity depending on the match-up. Perhaps the greatest depth chart question on defense right now is between Gregory and Tavon.

CROSS-PROMOTIONAL KICKASS PATRIOTS MERCH ALERT

One of the things we love doing at townienews, aside from celebrating jawdroperiffic Red Sox comeback wins, is making kickass Boston sports apparel that’s affordable, highly wearable and has the right mix of pride, pomp and Patriotsness. Well, there just so happens to be another place that makes Pats garb that’s PFS (pretty freakin sweet) as well. And we decided to team up with them and do a shop swap. So now, you can buy all the Patstastic gear and garb as designed by our favorite Pats blog, PatsPropaganda, and sold at PatsPropShop.com here at The Townie News Store. And our stuff is available in their shop, too. Basically we’re just trying to create an army of people in cool Brady, Gronk and Belichick swag that didn’t have to mortgage their house to get some FFF (fresh Foxboro fashion), knowhatimean?

And yes – we have some awesometown designs coming out for this season as well – so head on a swivel and eyes open, Patspeoples!

So now you can IGNORE THE NOISE, DO YOUR JOB, ROCK OUT WITH YOUR GRONK OUT and KEEP CALM AND BRADY ON in more places than before. And hopefully on more sites and in more retail outlets soon. Stay tuned, thanks for stopping by, and as always LET’S GO PATS!

Patriots vs. Vikings All 22 Thoughts: Defense Edition

Thank Hoodie the NFL puts All-22 film up now, it’s really so much better to help understand what kind of coverages and route combinations are being run. And the end zone cam is perfect for seeing gap alignment. Early on the Pats rotated through odd and even fronts, running primarily Cover 1 Robber, with Chung […]
