Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Pats – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Pats – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Nugget on Spikes below and not entirely unexpected, we pondered if Hightower was headed to more MLB time all offseason.

One line of thinking was that Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes stayed away from the team’s voluntary offseason program to give himself the best chance to become a three-down linebacker in the team’s system. But through eight training camp practices, it doesn’t seem like that is where things are decisively headed. More often than not, Spikes has been coming off the field in sub packages, and in some cases, top draft pick Jamie Collins (second round, 52nd overall) is coming on to add more speed and athleticism. It’s still early, but if anything, it looks like second-year linebacker Dont’a Hightower, not Spikes, might be primed to stay on the field more in passing situations.

Belichick attends Parcells’ Hall of Fame Induction

August 4, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Nice to see coach make it out for one of his mentors. And yes Parcells was talking to Belichick when he said he wanted a few more championship rings.

Just saw Bill Belichick, after he greeted Parcells during break. He coached #Patriots practice this morning. “Got here as soon as I could.”

It’s more technique,” he noted on Saturday. “I think I know most of the stuff we do here [from] the defensive standpoint, [but] you can always learn more. But technique and as we get into the season seeing different teams, seeing what they do and viewing it from the corner standpoint and the safety standpoint is one of the biggest differences.

Big takeaway: TE Sudfeld on the rise – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Big takeaway: TE Sudfeld on the rise – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Daniel Fells seems like he’s really developed this offseason, and seems to have a developed trust with Brady now. With him likely to take on some of the fill-in role for Hernandez, and Jake Ballard still not all the way back, there’s a real opportunity for Sudfeld in these preseason games.

He’ll likely play a lot, and get a chance to show what he can do in comparison to Michael Hoomanawanui.

Defensive standouts go to the two rookies who were responsible for a forced turnover. Safety Duron Harmon, a third-round pick, undercut an outbreaking route on a pass that was thrown by Tim Tebow. Top draft choice Jamie Collins also managed an interception of Tebow, wrestling a ball thrown into a tight window intended for Michael Hoomanawanui. Forced turnovers have become a regular occurrence by Collins.

How crazy would it be if Duron Harmon is starting next to Devin McCourty before long? Doesn’t seem like Tavon Wilson is showing much promise of making the second-year leap so far.

As for Jamie Collins, I’m very, very excited.
