What do you think about Hightower as MLB in a 4-3

August 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Saw it as a potential shift this offseason, and it sounds like it’s definitely the route they’re taking when they want more speed on the field in their base. Greg Bedard surmised the Pats would go full time to a Collins-Hightower-Mayo LB corps next season, we’ll see what happens this year. I really like Hightower, he might not be as crazy downhill aggressive as Spikes but I find him slightly more reliable from play to play. Excited to see how much of a jump he makes in year two.

Riley Cooper is likely to get second chance from Philadephia Eagles | The MMQB with Peter King

Riley Cooper is likely to get second chance from Philadephia Eagles | The MMQB with Peter King

I have heard Bill Belichick say some warm and grateful things about Harry Carson, about Bill Parcells, about Scott Pioli—those are the ones that come to mind; I’m sure there have been others. But I have never heard Belichick praise another person the way he praised Bruschi at the podium on this hot Massachusetts night. “There’s great players and then there’s great players, and Tedy Bruschi was a great, great football player, because of his passion, his team attitude toward the game. All second to none,’’ Belichick said. “There is no player I’ve ever coached that epitomizes a football player … When I look at the words ‘football player’ in the dictionary, you see Tedy Bruschi’s picture there. That’s the best way I can put it.”

There now seems to be more speed at linebacker, Jones looks primed to build on his 6-sack rookie season, defensive tackle depth is thin, and the continuity of having most of this group returning has them starting at a higher point than last year.

Big takeaway: Vince happy with D – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

So far so good on defense, mix in Marcus Benard’s pass rush and this could be the best group we’ve seen since 2007.

Bill Belichick 8/5 Press Conference Transcript

Bill Belichick 8/5 Press Conference Transcript

Q: Is tight end traditionally a difficult position to acclimate yourself to in this offense because of the number of responsibilities?

BB: I think it’s one of the most difficult positions in any offense. Any time you change formations, that player is really at the heart of the changes. You usually, the backs are usually in the backfield, other than some empty plays. The receivers are usually detached, other than some close formation plays. Normally the tight end or tight ends, they’re involved in a lot of the formation variations, which then involve them in a lot of different assignments. Basically they’re involved in the passing game, the running game, pass protection, blitz adjustments, all the multiple tight end personnel groups like goal line and short-yardage and four-minute offense and things like that in addition to their, as bigger players, their roles in the kicking game. It’s really hard to get around, you might be able to get around a part of that, but not too many parts of it. Or else the guy is a receiver or he’s an offensive lineman. That’s really what it comes down to. Sure, that position takes a lot. It takes a lot, there are a lot of assignments, there are a lot of adjustments. They have a lot of different responsibilities.

Barstool Sports’ Jerry Thornton Sends a Letter from Camp

August 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Nobody mixes astute football observations with fall-down funny like Jerry, and we’re not just saying that because he wore our Obbey shirt to camp. Great stuff in this one, including the picture it came with of course.

Brady was in limited action, splitting the first team reps with Ryan Mallet before calling it an early day.  But the thing that jumped out was the chemistry he already has with Danny Amendola.  We’ve treated DA like he’s the ugly chick we had to settle for at closing time, but he’s got a ridiculous skill set**.  He’s a little bigger than Wes Welker, and can go 0 to 60 faster than him.  But he’s got that same gear where the lower half of his body turns into blurry ovals, like the Road Runner.  And he seems more able to get behind defenses.  It’s early yet, but I stand by what I told Felger and Mazz Friday: I feel like Amendola is going to become my Spirit Animal.
