[T]he Patriots have an elite free safety in McCourty ( 10.0 at the position last year including playoffs), and a number of safeties with unique skill sets: Wilson is a smart veteran who can contribute close to the line of scrimmage, Gregory is a nice compelemnt to McCourty’s single-high looks, Wilson can stick with tight ends, while Harmon has nice range in two-high looks. Belichick mixes and matches on a week-to-week basis as much as any defensive coach in the league, so look for him to tap into the various skill sets in his defensive backfield.

There’s no shame in anyone’s inability to cover Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. It’s better to just accept it. But Johnson and that explosive Lions aerial attack can be held in check by hassling quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has yet to be sacked this preseason. The Patriots have recorded five sacks in about six series from their starting defense. Quarterback pressure will be integral tonight against the most explosive passing offense they’ll see until Week 4 in Atlanta.

With Amendola not expected to play after being held out of practices this week, it opens the door for Edelman to step into the all-important role as the team’s slot receiver. Edelman has played just four snaps with quarterback Tom Brady this preseason but this could be his chance to make a loud statement on his value to the team as a receiver.
