As one would expect with coordinator Mike Pettine moving from the Jets to the Bills this year, Buffalo’s defense looks “a lot like the Jets,” according to Belichick. That means a lot of different looks (especially on third down, when a defensive lineman could play a linebacker-type role), multiple fronts, and a heavy percentage of blitzing. So as Patriots offensive players prepare this week, they are marrying two areas: Bills personnel that they’ve come to know in recent years playing a Jet-like scheme.

It’s definitely, definitely a young football team. Right now … you just have to really make sure that we prepare well and get those guys ready to go. It’s definitely a lot different from what it was five years ago when I first got here, I’m one of the only guys to still be around, so you just see the turnover there and these young guys just have to … get ready to play a long season here.

Who wants a chance to have breakfast with Gronk? Check out GronkChomp.com!

In a classic video game setting, Gronk will fight off defenders as he chomps his way through the game board, trying to get to the Angus Steak Big N’ Toasteds in the end zones. Fans will be able to play this interactive game throughout September and October with the ultimate goal of becoming one of 87 lucky winners to have breakfast with Gronk at Gillette this November.

Fans will automatically receive one entry into the sweepstakes the first time they play each day, and 87 winners will be chosen at random to attend the breakfast. At the end of each day, the top five scorers of the day will win an $8.70 Dunkin’ Donuts mGift. As an added bonus, guests can also go into their local participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants and follow the instructions from the Giant Gronk standee to receive a unique code that unlocks a secret level of the game to earn more points.

The 49ers Kept Plans Close to the Vest, and 9 More Preseason Takeaways | The MMQB with Peter King

The Patriots made an interesting decision (no, it didn’t have to do with a quarterback) when it decided to cut veteran punter Zoltan Mesko and retain undrafted rookie Ryan Allen. Allen, who won the Ray Guy Award twice as the best punter in college football, is no slouch. Mesko opened the door last year when instead of ascending to elite status he plateaued, and he was average in big spots. Competitions are decided by practices and games, with the latter factoring in a little more heavily considering the pressure. After watching all four preseason games, I’d call the Mesko-Allen battle basically a draw. Allen and Mesko, respectively, were just about even in gross average (44.8 yards each), net (38.6 to 37.2 when you toss out the big Eagles return on Allen’s first punt), get-off time (1.32 to 1.30, hand to foot), and inside the 20-yard line conversions (4 of 5 for Allen, 2 of 2 for Mesko). Mesko’s advantage came in hangtime, 4.4 to 4.25, which points to a little bit more consistency.

Like most NFL teams, the Patriots will continue to shuffle the bottom of the roster this week and throughout the season, but as of Monday afternoon, they were carrying 14 rookies (including seven undrafted free agents) on their 53-man roster, both the highest numbers in the NFL.
