Edelman spikes like Gronk and scored like Gronk

Happy for the win, especially given that that there were no major injuries. One thing that stuck out to me was Vellano being heavily used to spell Kelly and Wilfork. Also, a lot of play action passes for Patriots, without a ton of success. I was surprised that Sudfeld was sparingly used, and some of the missed connections (especially the corner of the endzone throw to Edelman) made me wonder about what Dobson can do on those types of routes when healthy. Looking forward to your commentary.

Thanks, good thoughts. Curious to see the snap totals on a lot of guys, especially Vellano. Like usual thought he had some good, some bad. It’s hard not to think this is exactly what we should’ve expected. That was exactly how week one divisional games almost always seem to go, especially when they’re on the road in a tough place like Buffalo.

Yet again the Bills just couldn’t put the Pats away and Brady came back to ruin their day.

There’s no question this offense will be a work in progress, but if you look long term – when Gronk is back, Amendola is healthy, and the rooks have experience – I think we’ll be just fine.

Patriots vs. Bills: Takeaways from New England’s 23-21 Win over Buffalo

Patriots vs. Bills: Takeaways from New England’s 23-21 Win over Buffalo

Here are my takeaways from the game, including how impressed I was with Amendola’s toughness and ability to make tough catches in crunch time.

Amendola recorded a whopping seven catches on third down that converted for the first downs, including two huge ones on the game-winning drive. He finished the day with 10 catches for 104 yards. That right, seven of his ten catches were on third down, accounting for seven of the Pats’ 11 total conversions on the day.

Amendola might be nursing his groin injury for a while, but there’s no question how tough he is as a player and his willingness to go after the tough catches in the key moments of the game. That’s something the Patriots lacked the last few seasons.

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL, New England Patriots – ESPN Boston

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL, New England Patriots – ESPN Boston

Since Sunday, Sept. 1, the day after rosters around the NFL had to be trimmed to 53 players, the Patriots have made a whopping 16 transactions on the roster (not including practice squad). Five players have been cut and brought back – running back Leon Washington, guard Josh Kline, fullback James Develin, defensive back Marquice Cole and center Braxston Cave (practice squad) – and it could be six if defensive lineman A.J. Francis clears waivers and decides he wants to remain in New England on the practice squad. One of the big questions that has been asked over that time is, “Why?” The best answer from this view is that it all ties in to Bill Belichick’s team-building approach with a 61-player snapshot in mind (53 on the active roster, eight on the practice squad). The practice squad, and building depth at specific positions, seems like a big part of this. The Patriots target some young players from other teams, show an initial commitment to keep them on the 53-man roster by being willing to risk losing veterans they probably have a good feeling won’t sign elsewhere, and it develops some currency with the young players to keep them around on the practice squad if they clear waivers when later released. The timing of the Patriots’ decisions also seems to have a layer of strategy, as practice squads around the NFL are mostly formed quickly which can make it less likely for another team to pursue one of the young players they waive.

[T]he only reason we know Belichick’s weaknesses so well is because his strengths have kept him at the top of the NFL for over a decade. Willing to go “multiple” on both sides of the ball, Belichick is only married to one system: Winning. He’s constantly reinventing, and continually ahead of the rest of the […]
