What do you think happened with Harmon, haven’t heard a lot about him, do you think he still has a chance to start

August 17, 2014 by Mike Dussault

I think the safety position next to McCourty will be a gameplan-specific spot this season.

As we saw last year and against the Eagles on Friday, there seems to be a permanent spot for a single safety, three cornerback package in the secondary. Whether that’s due to the cornerbacks simply being better than the safeties behind McCourty, or an actual philosophical shift that corners are more equipped against offenses like Philly’s, I’m not sure.

I think we’ll see some packages with McCourty and Harmon on the back end at the same time, especially against the better passing attacks. Perhaps even three-safety looks at times as well with Chung in the box.

It’s important to remember that the preseason is as much about getting guys experience in different spots and throwing them into the fire to see how they do as it is running out your depth chart from top-to-bottom over the course of the game.

We can’t read too much into one player playing more or less most of the time. This might be the only chance the Pats get to see some of these guys in a game this season and it’s important to find out as much about them as possible, especially by surrounding them with the 1’s, going against the other teams 1’s.

While it’€™s interesting watching three of the Patriots most important players working off to the side by themselves while the rest of the practices goes on on another field (sometimes, Bill Belichick wanders over to get a look at what’€™s going on), Revis said it’€™s simply a chance for Gronkowski to get some work in as the tight end continues his rehab. “€œIt’€™s giving Gronk a look and giving Tom and Gronk a look and I’€™m just doing what Coach asks me to do,”€ Revis said. “€œHe asked me to just try to cover him the best way I could and make sure Gronk got reps. It’€™s been going great, and we’€™ve been working hard.”

Bill Belichick is always thinking of ways to build a better team and foster more team chemistry, and there was something notable along those lines in the Patriots’ locker room after Friday’s preseason game: Many of the lockers of returning players were moved to a different spot in the room.

If Tyms reminded fans of Moss, there’s good reason — the first-year pro is a disciple of the Rand, W.V., native.
“Yeah, that’s my favorite player,” Tyms said Sunday at Gillette Stadium after training camp of Moss. “That’s kind of the reason I signed (with the San Francisco 49ers) out of college. That was my favorite player, I wanted to learn everything I could from him. He’s a really good guy. He taught me a lot as far as deep ball, and everything like that.”

If Rob Gronkowski is not on the field, the tight end will most often be an extra blocker, whether it’s James Develin, Michael Hoomanawanui, Steve Maneri, or someone else filling the role. The phrase “[insert offensive lineman] has reported as an eligible receiver” — signifying that the Patriots had put an offensive tackle at tight end in a jumbo package — echoed through Gillette Stadium time after time on Friday night.

Dealing with a Monday morning Patriots hangover

Ever since 2007 I haven’t had a problem getting over Patriots regular season losses. If there’s one thing that 16-0 taught me, it’s that losses can be a good thing for a football team in the long term. It’s about growing as a team, learning from your mistakes, and putting together a string of 3-4 […]
