First off, I’ve been hot on Butler all year long and what a time to really show up and make the biggest kind of impact. What are the odds we sign this playmaker for more time in the offseason? Could his size be an issue in terms of versatility or did his play on Sunday make up for any doubts there may have been?

One thing we know about the Patriots, they won’t suddenly give a huge contract to someone based on one play. Just look at Jonas Gray, who disappeared after running wild all over the Colts.

There’s no doubt that Butler has a knack for making plays on the ball and he made remarkable progress in his first year considering where he started and where he ended up. But he needs to take advantage of this offseason and really take that next step.

I expect Revis will be retained, so he and Browner should return as the starting outside corners. We saw Logan Ryan targeted plenty last year and he was up and down (and did have some good plays in the Super Bowl as well), so it’s not unreasonable to think Butler could overtake him. Can Butler play the slot? Or is he most effective outside? We saw a little of both out of him this year.

Could he even overtake Arrington in the slot? He certainly seems to have made Alfonzo Dennard expendable, and I like Dennard. Butler does have better size and length than both.

Ultimately we don’t really have to figure it out now.  Butler is under contract and will now have a full offseason in the program to improve. I’m excited to see how he develops. He is a ballhawk, and that is not something you can teach.

All year long, this team ground it out. They’re tough physically. They’re tough mentally. They competed day after day. I can tell you that I work this team hard. I know from personal experience that this team came to work every day. They didn’t make any excuses. When things didn’t go right, they just rolled up their sleeves and got back to work and tried to fix them. It wasn’t always perfect like last night. It’s a group that never stopped competing, never stopped fighting and never stopped playing. I think last night’s game, for me, was reflective of the entire year, what I saw on a daily basis from that group of players and coaches.

“It’s been a great privilege to coach Tom for the last 15 years, 14 years as starting quarterback. We have a great relationship. We meet on a regular basis weekly several times. I can’t think of a more deserving player than Tom to be the recipient of the accolades that he has this week, and particularly last night and today here. He’s our leader. He competes as well as any player I’ve ever coached. He’s well-prepared. He has great poise and great presence. He may not always be perfect, as it is for any of us. We all have our moments, but Tom, like many other players on our team, is the guy that fights to the end and competes until the end. There’s no player I respect more for that than Tom. That’s been a great pillar of strength for our football team for the past decade and a half. I sincerely appreciate that.“ – Bill Belichick

Getting a Feel for the Patriots Draft Positions

I’ll unleash my only Patriots mock draft of the spring this Thursday and in preparation for it I’ve been running dozens of mock drafts on FanSpeak’s mock draft generator. Some interesting trends have started to emerge, and it also forces me to go back and consider guys that I left off my initial Top-50 Big […]
