My first 2011 Patriots draft binky: Cameron Jordan

January 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

So it took a little over a week for me to develop a draft crush on a rookie prospect and here he is, Cameron Jordan, DL from Cal. The things that stand out to me about Jordan that make me think he’d be a great pick is that:

  • 3 down player, can play DE on run downs, then shift inside and rush the passer on third down.
  • 6’ 4", 300 with long arms and big hands.
  • Physical, relentless
  • good character

So basically everything that the Pats need/want he has. Now it’s just a matter of hoping he last till 17. Of course by the combine he could be considered a top ten pick, at which point I’d have to break up with him. That’s the thing about draft binkies. Get attached but don’t get too attached.

OchoJohnson to Patriots? Over Belichick’s dead hoodie.

January 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

It’s a tough time of year for Patriots fans right now. Technically it’s not even the NFL offseason yet, so most Pats analysts and fans are spending their time either gearing up for free agency and the draft, or wondering if Chad “The Chad” Ochcocinco Johnson might look good in New England next year.

Let me go out on a limb and say THERE’S NO FUCKING CHANCE. The Patriots had the best offense in the NFL by a mile in 2010, yet the Jets shut them down in the playoff game and it’s time to go back to the drawing board?

Three weeks ago, everyone laughed at the thought of the Pats struggling without a “deep threat”. But apparently that was the one missing ingredient from making a Super Bowl run this year, if of course you don’t count shitty playoff game performances from just about every single Patriot, especially Tom Brady, and a young defense that showed their inexperience by playing tight.

Now people are saying Brandon Tate is a bust, Taylor Price couldn’t even get on the field until week seventeen mop up minutes so he must suck too, and Welker/Branch are too similar and we’re doomed and on and on… So yeah, three weeks ago, second greatest offense of the decade. Today? One that needs to be revamped for that uber-necessary deep threat.

So why does The Chad make sense? Because BB likes him as a person? So what. I like a lot of people as people, that doesn’t mean I want them in my house everyday and hanging out with me and my friends. And it definitely doesn’t mean that BB is ready to bring that element in to his young, impressionable team.

The circus left town after 2009 folks and it isn’t coming back on BB’s watch again. Especially not in the form of The Chad who loves the spotlight like no one else in the NFL.

And I have nothing against The Chad! I think he brings a sense of fun and playfulness to the sport that not many other players can bring. But that doesn’t mean I think that his talent (and the personality that comes with it) are the missing ingredients for a Patriots Super Bowl run.

Now everyone can get on me and say “oh but he’ll change his act if he came to the Pats”, or “look he’s already going back to Chad Johnson” or “BB talked to him once before a game and it seems like they’re totally BFFs.”

Whatever. People do remember that BB benched his best receiver in a playoff game for making veiled foot comments in a press conference, right? You think he’s going to bring in The Chad and just hope to the Football Gods that all the antics, reality shows, and tweets are things of the past? Highly doubtful.

Here are the facts:

Branch and Welker will both be 100% healthy in 2011. Price came out of a small run-first college so he needed a red shirt year. He will compete with Tate to be the X receiver. There also could be a mid to low round rookie in the mix as well. That will be the Patriots 2011 receiving corps. And if you take the Jets loss with some perspective you’d realize that the Pats are going to be potent on offense again with this group.

“Some think he fits best at left defensive end in a four-man front. I also think he’d fit well as a defensive end in the 3-4. He has been very consistent over the first three days of practices.

"One of his greatest strengths is his hands. He has very active hands, very strong hands, and that makes it really hard for an offensive lineman to stick on the block. One of the things that separates the good defensive linemen from the great ones is the ability to counter when they don’t win with their first move, and he does an excellent job countering when he doesn’t win with his first move. He’s relentless, too. You’ll see him chasing running backs 40 yards down the field.

"Watching Jordan this week, one part that stood out was when he was going against Indiana offensive tackle James Brewer. At one point, he used not one swim move, but two swim moves, and ran right around Brewer before Brewer could get his hands on him.

"For the Patriots in their 3-4 defense, when you think of that 5-technique defensive end, you traditionally think of those players as mountains – tough and stout – which Jordan can be. But he also moves well for a guy with his size and build. So I see him as lining up at the 5-technique, stopping the run, and then staying on the field on third down and still getting to the quarterback from the tackle spot. The other part is that everything you hear about him is that he’s a great, great kid in terms of character.”

Steve Muench of Scouts Inc on Cameron Jordan.

Jordan is fast becoming my Patriots boo for 17th overall.

Football Outsiders: White & Slater lead Patriots Special Teams

Football Outsiders: White & Slater lead Patriots Special Teams

It’s no secret that I was openly rooting for Matthew Slater to get cut last year. Everyone says he’s a great guy, but I think my problem with him were his horrendous kick returns. He was a master of running full speed, straight on into tacklers. Usually he got himself drilled and pumped up the other team in the process. Well in 2010 Slater didn’t return a single kick and now he’s starting to grow on me. Clearly he’s fast and is an above average special teams player (when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands), so this summer I probably won’t be rooting for him to be cut.

White is the kind of player that no one ever sees coming. There’s always a lot of roster movement around final cutdowns over Labor Day weekend and White was one guy who randomly became a Patriot that weekend. He doesn’t have the build to really play defense for the Pats but clearly they identified him as a player who could help on Special Teams and he did just that.

Markel Carter looks like a pass rusher to me…. just based on looks alone… Central Arkansas Defensive Coordinator Matt Williamson on him (via Reiss)… “The first thing I’d say is that he wanted to be really good. At the same time, he wanted everyone else around him to know he was a good person. He […]
