Now this would be an acquisition I could get behind. Fitz is 27 (6.5 years younger than Ochostinko and none of the off the field baggage) and clearly would be an explosive playmaking addition to the Pats. 

The question becomes how much should the Pats be willing to give up for Fitz? I’d say the 17th pick overall is out of the question. But the 28th and Brian Hoyer I’d consider. We all know that the Patriots aren’t going to pick another twelve guys this year. Some of these picks either have to be traded for players, to move up, or for future picks. 

Brady’s not getting any younger and there’s no reason to continually stock up on draft picks. At some point you’ve got to go all in and say “alright we’re maximizing all this value we’ve acquired over the years RIGHT NOW”.

In this latest mock draft NEPatriotsDraft.com has us taking Aldon Smith and BC tackle Anthony Castonzo, while waiting to grab a DE until the first pick of the second round. 

In the grand scheme of  drafting there are certain positions that are far closer to locks than others. Wide receivers can be hugely difficult to project, while offensive lineman tend to be a little safer.

A defensive end, who can play on the outside during run downs, then shift inside on passing downs, would seem to be a little safer than an outside linebacker unless you’re positive that OLB is going to also be a three down player.

So you have to weigh what is easier for a rookie…

For a college defensive lineman to learn to hold the point of attack and effectively two gap on run downs. Then having the array of pass rush moves necessary to get pressure on the QB on third down.

Or for a college defensive end to learn how to play standing up… to set the edge in the running game but also drop into coverage? He also must have the array of pass rush moves to get after the QB.

Neither skill set is easy, especially in the Belichick defensive scheme, but personally I lean toward the defensive end option and that is why as of now (three months before the draft) I’m leaning that position at 17.

What do you guys think of the Pro Bowl jerseys this year? Notice they’re using the Patriots number font. I notice stuff like this. I might have a problem.

Never really got people who bought Pro Bowl jerseys. Do you think Brady has them framed some where even though he’s only played in like one of them?

What I do like are the t-shirts that they’ve been wearing at practice. I need to go on an extensive schwag hunt later for one of those…

As I said a couple days ago it looks like there will be some definite 3-4 DE’s that fit the Patriots scheme that they can choose from at 17. Pencil it in, there might not be a need to trade up unless there’s a run on them early. Otherwise cheer every pick that is not a defensive lineman.

The Pats need a 3-4 defensive end, and they’ve got some good choices. Watt, Cal’s Cameron Jordan and Iowa’s Adrian Clayborn could all be on New England’s radar.

A study in Patriots playoff loss hoodies

I’m definitely a superstitious person. Once I find a good game day schwag combo I try to stick to it. That’s why I was even more shocked when we lost to the Jets this year and I was in a shwag combo that had not lost all season. 

Someday I wish someone (and it will probably be me) will put together a game by game record of every hoodie ever worn by BB, but today we look at the hoodies that have been worn for the last five playoff losses.

First up is this one from the 2005 AFCDG against the Broncos. Notice the sleeves are still pretty long and the complete absence of a hat.

Next up we have the 2006 AFCCG loss to the Colts. Again no hat, but it looks like BB was really starting to take the sleeves up a notch. Maybe it was because it was so hot in the Colts dome?

Here we have the Super Bowl 42 one. Or as I like to call it the “red alert” hoodie because the second I saw it I felt uncomfortable with the choice. The sleeves are cut off practically to a short sleeve sweatshirt and that is one piece of fashion I’ve never seen before. I don’t know why BB chose this one, but I’m sure it ended up burning on the floor after the most disappointing team sport loss of the last decade. This could possibly be the most infamous of all BB hoodies.

After a playoff absence in 2008 BB returned with the old faithful grey hoodie and the 50th anniversary throwback pom hat. I had bought this same hat specifically to wear for the playoff game so you can probably imagine my joy when I saw BB had it on too. It was a nice touch, a tribute to the team’s Pat Patriot past, while also keeping his signature look. We went down together that day…

Finally we have this past season’s loss to the Jets where we have the new incarnation of the hoodie. I’m not sure if old grey has been retired but clearly the blue hoodie is now the go to of choice. I really felt good after seeing he had chosen this one for the game. But alas, we sucked and lost.

So what does it all mean? That there’s absolutely no rhyme or reason or correlation between the hoodie and the team’s performance. Especially when we take a look at the playoff winning hoodies which will be coming along in part two tomorrow…
