Patriots OLB Pass Rush prospect: Greg Romeus

Romeus is coming off an injury, could be a mid-round pick up who could project to a weakside OLB.

The Patriots were the league’s fourth most conservative defense when it came to blitzing last season. They rushed four or fewer defenders on 73.7 percent of dropbacks. Generating more pressure out of the standard four-man rush – which is a priority for most teams – should be high on Bill Belichick’s offseason list. This is reflected in the Patriots registering sacks on only 3.7 percent of dropbacks with four or fewer pass rushers (tied-27th in NFL).

When the Patriots did blitz, sending five or more rushers, opposing quarterbacks weren’t under enough consistent pressure. Quarterbacks completed 63.9 percent of their passes against the Patriots’ blitz, ranking New England 31st in that category. Opponents’ 43.2 percentage converting first downs against the blitz also ranked the Patriots 31st.

NFP: Mock Draft #3

17. JJ Watt

28. Danny Watkins

I know I’m higher on Watkins than a lot of people who think he’s too old, but if he can step right in and play it doesn’t really bother me that much. I mean we got 6 years out of Mankins and he could likely be gone, we’d easily get 6 out of Watkins.

NFL Network’s number one individual season performance of all time goes to… Tom Brady! I love that they start it off with the tail end of Manning in 2004.

Regardless of how it ended 2007 was a magical season and should eventually be one that I can look back on fondly. I think this might depend on whether BB and TFB get at least one more ring.

Despite how horribly it ended this team came within one defensive stop from the UNDISPUTED greatest team of all time. I think just about everyone can probably agree that they are definitely the best team ever that didn’t win a Super Bowl. Oh well, it was 5 months of controversy and throttlings and the rug was pulled out for the first time at the last possible moment.

It’s been a while since a good Patriots highlight video popped up, thankfully that streak was broken today with the appearance of this well-done Brady one.

Here’s Allen Bailey out of Miami, currently the 24th ranked Patriots prospect on my big board. I really like what I see here out of Bailey, he’s not the ideal size for defensive end in the Patriots scheme but he is physical and athletic.

I would call him a tweener for the Pats system, much like the similarly-sized Cameron Jordan, in that he might be a little heavy to really excel in coverage, but he’s probably a little light to take on two offensive lineman and not give up ground.

However, the biggest problem with a lot of fanalyst scouting for the Patriots is that everyone is looking for the next Seymour or McGinest and if prospects don’t fit that mold they don’t think they’re a fit.

I believe this is faulty thinking.

No two players are alike, what you need to find are smart, physical players who take football very seriously. If they have those qualities first and foremost it’s likely that BB will figure out a way to use them.

For example, as much I think JJ Watt would be a great addition there’s still part of me that wonders how well he can hold his ground and two-gap. I don’t doubt he could excel in any scheme, but I don’t see a Seymour clone. To be honest I believe Cameron Heyward (a polarizing prospect for sure) looks a little more like your ideal two-gapping defensive end.

No matter what there are going to trade offs with any player you select. As BB says you’re getting everything when you select someone, the good and the not-quite-ideal.

So it’s important not to get too caught up in measurables, watch the player play. And when I see someone like Bailey he looks like a player that the Pats might want to find a spot for.

did you watch panthers and 49ers? thoughts on the panthers?

Just watched a few of the Panthers’ games and I came away really impressed with their defense. Kuechly is the kind of linebacker I wish Mayo was. He’s the kind of linebacker the Pats defense needs, as I heard him called, a 360 degree linebacker. They have a good rotation at defensive tackle which goes […]
