33. Nate Solder (T): Solder would greatly benefit from a year with Dante Scarnecchia, and if he could have the kind of rookie year Sebastian Vollmer did where he’s eased in a bit, he’d be well prepared to be an eventual starter on whichever side he’s more comfortable. With him and Vollmer as the bookends of the future the Patriots offensive line would be intimidatingly huge. As a former tight end he has the foot skills necessary to get out and block the slip screens that the Patriots love to run. There might be greater needs but being able to take a talented player like Solder before the true need for a tackle has arrived is a huge luxury.

My mock from two weeks ago with Solder going to Pats at 33. So I was 16 picks off. Still happy…

Solder to the Patriots at 17th overall. I had Solder to the Pats at 28 in my mock draft, I’ve thought he’s a great fit with his size and athleticism. Assuming the Pats re-sign Matt Light he’ll have a year to work with Dante Scarnecchia. I like the pick and it’s definitely in an area that will be a big need shortly…

Another Patriots draft rumor…

April 28, 2011 by Mike Dussault

When you’ve got a bunch a picks and a penchant for trading/disinformation you’re likely to be the most gossiped about team at the draft, and that is definitely the case with the Pats today as we now have rumor number three:

If North Carolina linebacker Robert Quinn is on the board when the Redskins are on the clock with the 10th overall pick, look for a possible trade with the Pats.

This comes on the heels of first the Pats have discussions with the Browns about 6th overall, then the Cowboys at 9th overall. Take it for what it’s worth, which is potentially something but likely nothing….

Any proposed Cowboys-Patriots trade will not happen. Yet there are any number of teams interested in moving back, including Dallas.

“Every pick that’s happening,” he said, “we’re talking about the potential of trading up or back. When we get to our spot, we’re thinking about not only the player but about trading back and what’s the value in that.

"Is there a group of four players there, that if we move back three spots, we know we’re going to get a good player we like that will help this football team and get an extra pick? Or does it make sense if we’re three picks away and we know that there’s a chance that, [for example] Matt Light, that he’s going to disappear off the board? And what would it cost us to assure that we get the guy that we want? We did that with Matt Light and Ty Warren with the Patriots.”

If that seems like a lot of action in a short amount of time, that’s because it is. Pioli says at the end of the day you should be “emotionally exhausted” rather than sitting around waiting for your turn to pick.

“You have to think – be proactive. Even if you don’t do it, think about different ways that you can strategize at having a better chance of doing what you believe is right.

"Sometimes it doesn’t work out. Sometimes you make moves and you completely blow it and make the wrong choice or wrong decision. or you go up and get a guy that doesn’t work out. As long as you put the time and energy into it, you increase the chances of making good decisions.”

I know it’s a week early for your gameplan, but I see this game as coming down to 3 keys each for offense and defense. The Defense: (1) Keeping contain on Wilson to keep him in the pocket; (2) tackling Lynch; (3) avoiding the big pass play that Seattle feasts on. The Offense: (1) avoiding turnovers; (2) protecting Brady; (3) running enough to effectively use play action

Yeah I’d agree with the major points here, though I think it’s a bit of a fallacy you need to run to set up play action. You just need to be good at play action. Stopping Lynch and containing Wilson when no one is open are the biggest two keys to the game. Protecting Brady […]
