NFP: Patriots Draft Review

NFP gets it, though I highly doubt Matt Light is moving inside to Guard…

Let’s face it, Bill Belichick has built one of the best if not the best football operations departments in the league. He knows how to work a draft better than anyone and because of this he has multiple high picks every year. He did it again this year when he traded the No. 28 selection in this draft for New Orleans’ No. 56 selection and their first-round pick in next year’s draft . He also made a trade with the Raiders getting their second-round pick next year. So not only did the Pats get a bunch of good players this year, they also have two firsts and two seconds next year.

The Law Firm on ESPN First Take

We haven’t heard too much from Benny over the years but every time I do I like him more and more. What a consummate Patriots, huh? The kind of guy you’d go to war with any day of the week.

Not many football players have the mental and physical drive to work from an undrafted free agent to a 1000-yard running back in three seasons. Most of us thought of him as just a stop-gap at first, but clearly he has gotten better and better and we should expect an even better season in 2011.

I’m still wondering why we didn’t see more of him in the playoff loss.

The guy that stands out to me [as a comparison] when it comes to style of play is Marshall Faulk. He can run between the tackles and be physical inside. He has the ability to pass-protect on third down. He can catch the ball as a wide receiver, or coming out of the backfield. He can be an every-down guy and is the type of player who is going to rise to the occasion with the opportunity to compete. He has that competitive spirit. He’s already a talented young man, but the thing that separates him from a lot of guys is his work ethic and that he’s smart. He understands football, so he’ll adjust to things because of his football IQ.

First Madden-style glimpse of Mallett as a Patriots. He better not go with that facemask, need a better look than that! And I doubt they’re bringing Babe Parilli’s 15 out of retirement for you.

Most people on the outside looking in at a draft only see it on a need basis. Unless you have the same information as a team, you really can’t have a value board. Either way, these players haven’t even stepped on the field yet, which makes it premature to assume how they will perform.

Let’s wait and see how much Jermaine Cunningham has developed and what’s happens when veterans are available.
