[Eric Moore] is an interesting player when it comes to the Patriots’ 2011 roster. He is 30 years old, joined the club in December and played a variety of roles – rush end, outside linebacker, defensive end in the 3-4. He started three games because of some injuries. Bill Belichick was asked about Moore on the final day of the draft and said: “He came in here at the end of the year at the tail end of the season and was able to contribute. I don’t think that’s the easiest thing to do. A player has got to have some things going for him to be able to do that. It would be nice to work with him through an entire season – whether it’s minicamp, training camp, whatever it happens to be, and give him an opportunity from the beginning, and see if that is helpful to their performance and production.”

Frenz: Patriots have the most complete backfield in the NFL

Good stuff as always from my podcast mate. This Patriots backfield has to be one of the most intriguing in the NFL. Last year everyone said the Pats could play any style of game offensively, and that might’ve been a little overblown in terms of their backfield. But now you’ve got four unique backs who each bring something different to the party.

Of course there’s some overlap between them, and that’s a good thing. Just imagine being a defender and having to constantly identify who’s in the backfield and what the biggest threat is.

Couldn’t be more excited to see how it all comes together. And seriously, the first person who tries to call it a “four-headed monster” gets deported from Patriots Nation.

Welcome to the NFL Lockout Void

Every off-season I lament the two major voids that take place over the course of the six months we must endure without football. Usually they break down as follows:

  • Post-Season Void: the period after the Super Bowl but before Free Agency or the Scouting Combine. Usually you’re picking up the pieces from how the season ended, starting draft research, and looking at free agent possibilities so it’s fairly tolerable.
  • Post-Draft Void: while you can fill much of March and April with draft and free agency stuff, once the draft ends and mini-camps are over we enter the longest and hardest time of the off-season. It doesn’t get much worse than mid-May through late July, the period we’re entering right now.

Well here we are,  in the midst of a new and uncharted void which I will dub the Lockout Void.

The Lockout Void has elements of hope that the Post-Draft Void of years past did not because we still have all of Free Agency ahead of us. Who knows, the sides could hammer out an agreement and we could spend all of June (always the worst month of the NFL year) in a Free Agent frenzy.

But there is an underlying feeling of pessimism that maybe a deal won’t get done anytime soon. I don’t think anyone knows for sure what will happen if the lockout continues and the sides are unable to work out a deal.

When will free agency start? Could it not be until August or even September? How would a team with a ton of free agents like the Jets manage to assemble a team just weeks before the season starts? (Okay that one isn’t really bothering me that much).

Obviously there’s a ton of uncertainty right now, but that almost makes this last and most painful void a little more tolerable. This year, May and June could very well be filled with a great deal of NFL news and moves. So strangely, the Lockout Void is actually preferable to the usual Post-Draft void, when we’d only have a couple mini-camps to keep our football appetite satiated.

However, until the lockout ends, Free Agency starts and we have a firm date for the start of training camp there won’t be too much to write about. That’s one thing I’m not looking forward to. But we’ll just carry on and hope this mess is resolved sooner than later.

I just hope the NFL doesn’t use this post as ammo in their next court appeal.

Shane Vereen at the Skills Competition 2011

I am constantly impressed every time I see Vereen with how thick he is. A lot of the knock on him was not having the size, but I think an NFL training program is going to transform this guy into a multi-purpose attack beast.

BST&N/Desberg: Important time for Patriots wide receivers

Not a lot has been said about the Patriots wide receiver corps in the wake of a draft that many hoped would land the Pats a “deep threat”. I’ve always been of the opinion that they’d let their younger guys develop, and if they did make an additional it would be a veteran free agent.

Many smart football guys like Mike Lombardi do think the Pats should add someone, but I don’t necessarily thinks it’s a lock that they do.
