Patriots vs Seahawks – Player Ups & Downs

September 22, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

A loss that feels kinda like a win, do you get what I mean? Sunday night filled me with optimism for the rest of the season, after all, we went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the league. Here’s Sunday’s ups & downs.

Ups ⬆️

Cam Newton
After proving he could still run the ball effectively last week, Newton put up the highest amount of passing yards for a Patriots offense in three years on Sunday night. Whilst still rushing for two TDs, he showed superb accuracy to his receivers, who all stepped up to help him. Had a few wayward passes and threw a pick, but all in all, another up week for Cam.

Julian Edelman
Any questions about Edelman’s commitment to the team were answered. He racked up career-high 179 yards from 8 catches, and at times flew around the field like it was his first game in the league. Aside from the big game statistically speaking, the chemistry between Cam and Jules is growing every week, and I think they can be a formidable force this year.

Patriots vs Dolphins – Player Ups & Downs

September 14, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Some major positives to take from yesterday’s win against the Dolphins, I present your new weekly post-game player review, here’s yesterday’s ups & downs.

Ups ⬆️

Cam Newton
A fine start for Cam’s Patriot career in a game where he made very few mistakes. Newton led the Patriots offense passing 15/19 155 YDS, and rushing for 75 YDS, 2 TD’s. Something of note was his accuracy, although the passing game wasn’t off the charts today, Newton was good with his throws, he just needs better targets. A solid first start for the new number 1.

Cam Newton rushed the ball 15 times for 75 yards in his first game with the @Patriots

Inconsistent Patriots Hang On Again to Beat Jets

October 15, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots hung on once again to beat the Jets 24-17 to move into first place in the AFC East for the first time in 2017.

It was another up-and-down performance for the Pats that closely mirrored what we saw against the Buccaneers 10 days earlier. One drive they’re forcing three-and-outs or marching down the field, the next they’re getting gashed by big plays with wide open receivers or going three-and-out themselves.

It’s a maddening display of inconsistency that has become the hallmark of this edition of the Pats. What drives you nuts is that they show they’re capable of being dominant at times on both sides of the ball. But in crunchtime neither side of the ball seems to deliver with authority.

But deliver they did even if there is plenty to pick apart.

Still, a win is a win, especially a divisional win on the road. The Patriots definitely still have a long way to go, maybe longer than they’ve ever had to go in the middle of October, but four wins buys you some time.

Here’s how it all went down.

Pats Get Help and Hold On vs. Bucs

October 6, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots-Buccaneers Thursday Night Football clash came down to the final play with the much-maligned Patriots defense getting the stop to preserve a 19-14 victory.

The Pats move to 3-2 with an extended break to re-evaluate how things have gone to start the season. It was a needed win and hopefully one to build off of. The defense was far better, forcing six punts but showed a lack of discipline often and still struggled to stop big plays. They were also helped by three missed field goals by Nick Folk that could’ve changed the game.

The offense moved the ball frequently, but went quiet at the end, punting twice  and amassing just 42 yards in three fourth-quarter possessions. A recovered onside kick helped set up a long field goal when the Pats got just seven yards when a first down would’ve sealed it.

Tom Brady threw for 300 yards but had two turnovers  that luckily cost the team zero points. Brandin Cooks and Mike Gillislee continue to emerge, while Danny Amendola (eight catches) came through on third down. The offense is headed in the right direction if they can get their offensive line together for 60 minutes.

Yes, there’s still much to work on, especially the crazy number of hits that Brady is taking. But a win is a win and a long break is a long break. This game was a positive step forward for this team despite some definite problems and recurring flaws.

Here’s how it went down.
