Week 8 Scouting Report: Buffalo Bills

October 26, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

What a busy Tuesday in Pats Nation (or Bill’s Mafia as Doug Kyed penned) yesterday was. The Patriots dealt away TE AJ Derby, my training camp binky, to the Broncos for a 5th round pick in 2017, and traded for Lions LB Kyle Van Noy and a 7th rounder in exchange for a 6th rounder. We won’t get into draft/trade talk here, but just keep in mind BB might not be done wheeling and dealing just yet.

The Bills have slowly turned into a worthy adversary, being the only real contender in the AFC East. Sexy Rexy is notorious for throwing his best at Tom Brady and the Buffalo offense has come to life under an inspired running game. This will be a great challenge for Brady and Co.

Here is everything you need to know about The Buffalo Bills aka, “The Only Team to stop Jacoby Brissett”

Week 8 at Buffalo Bills

Sunday October 30

1 pm EST, CBS

Low 50’s 80% chance of rain, 16 mph winds

Opponent/Patriots Stats
Bills: 4-3

Notable Games: In Week 2 Rex Ryan fired then OC Greg Roman and since their Week 4 shut out win against NE, the Bills have turned it around and proved their worth.

Common Opponents: Arizona Cardinals (Both teams won), Miami Dolphins (Pats won, Bills lost).

Week 7 Scouting Report: Pittsburgh Steelers

October 19, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

Another week, another Patriots win. It’s gonna get really hard when this franchise falls back to Earth with the rest of league. Reminds me of a great Charles Barkley quote, “When Belichick and Brady leave, y’all team is gonna f*****g suck.”  This franchise is pretty safe for the next few years but you have to wonder, how will the the team transition out of the BB/Brady era into a new one. Something to ponder later, but in the meantime…

Here’s everything you need to know about the Pittsburgh Steelers, aka “The Pittsburgh (Antonio) Browns.”

Week 7 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Sunday October 23

4:25 pm EST, CBS

Low 60’s, 10% chance of rain, 11mph winds

Opponent/Patriots Stats:

Steelers: 4-2

Notable Games: The Steelers were blown out in a Week 3 loss to their next door neighbors, the Philadelphia Eagles 34-3. They came roaring back in a big way decimating the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14 the following week.

Common Opponents: Cincinnati Bengals (both teams won) and Miami Dolphins (Patriots won Steelers lost 15-30).

Week 6 Scouting Report: Cincinnati Bengals

October 12, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

Tom Brady is coming home. The beginning of the season the magnifying glass was on the defense and seeing if they could be the winning force on the team. Now, we turn to the consistently top tier offense, headed by the Legendary QB, as well as an impossibly intimidating TE duo of Gronk and Bennett. After righting the ship against The Brownies, New England has a real test against a legitimate AFC team.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Bengals, aka, “The Red Heads”

Week 6 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Sunday, October 16

Week 5 Scouting Report: Cleveland Browns

October 5, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

There is not a GIF or youtube link out there that would do justice to my excitement of seeing Tom Brady back behind center. It’s probably the most “Browns Thing” ever for them to get Brady on his first game back from suspension. Sorry Cleveland. At least you have LeBron.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Browns, aka “The Unlucky Punching Bags of Tom Brady”

Week 5: vs. Cleveland Browns (Tickets)

Sunday, October 9th

1pm EST, CBS

Partly Cloudy, 60’s

Week 4 Scouting Report: Buffalo Bills

September 28, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

After an incredibly satisfying trouncing of the Texans, the Bills all of a sudden might not be the cakewalk we thought them to be. Sexy Rexy’s squad showed some life in a defeat of the Arizona Cardinals. Fun Fact of the Day, that was Chandler Jones’ first loss to Buffalo since he’s been in the league (not counting Week 17 of the 2014 season where several starters sat). Now it’s time to find out if Buffalo actually has any fight in them.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Bills aka “The Super Ryan Brothers”

Week 4: vs. Buffalo Bills (Tickets)

Sunday, October 2

1pm EST, CBS

Mostly Cloudy, High 60’s

Opponent/Patriots Stats:
Bills: 1-2
Notable Games: Week 2 vs. NY Jets. Rex Ryan fired OC Greg Roman after the game.

Common Opponents: Arizona Cardinals (Buffalo 33-18)

Recent games vs. Pats: Week 2 of 2015 (NE 40-32), Week 11 of 2015 (NE 20-13)

[table id=16Bills1 /]

Notable Players

TYROD TAYLOR QB: 47/77 comp (61%), 527 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 83.6 rating

LESEAN MCCOY RB: 48 carries, 227 yds, 4.7 avg, 3 TDs, 1 fumble, 11 rec, 49 yds,

SAMMY WATKINS WR: 6 rec, 63 yds, 10.5 avg, 0 TDs,

KYLE WILLIAMS DT

Injury Alerts

Patriots:

Jimmy Garappolo is still dealing with an AC joint injury. While the arrow is pointing up on his recovery (Garappolo was at practice on Tuesday), I wouldn’t anticipate him playing. If he does play, expect JFG to be limited in his throwing.

Jacoby Brissett has injured his right thumb according to multiple reputable outlets. However, the severity is up for debate. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Brissett would be fine to throw. Brisket was also at practice on Tuesday. Expect to see Brissett out there for the start

Dont’a Hightower was inactive last week and the defense posted a shutout so obviously Hightower was the problem *sarcasm emoji.* Having him back would be a help to the defense and free up Jamie Collins to do more. Keep an eye on the injury report today for his status.

Rob Gronkowski played last game for the first time this season but was obviously limited. Coaches seemed to have him on a snap count. You figure this week he’ll be a little more effective and have a little more juice in him considering the 10 days off between games. Hopefully, we see more of the Gronk that will make Sexy Rexy quiver in his boots.

Jonathan Cooper is probably a ghost. Who knows when we’ll see him.

Bills:

Sammy Watkins is the stud Buffalo receiver who has struggled to get healthy since the offseason. He had surgery on a stress fracture in his foot. He played Weeks 1 and 2 but it was reported he was dealing with significant pain, explaining his low numbers. Watkins was inactive last week. He’s one who, if he plays, doesn’t look to be very effective.

Key Matchups:

Patriots:

vs. WR1: 14th —–  vs. Logan Ryan vs. Sammy Watkins

vs. WR2: 20th —– Malcolm Butler vs. Marquise Goodwin

vs. other WR: 16th —– Justin Coleman vs. Robert Woods

vs. RB: 21st —– Jamie Collins vs. LeSean McCoy

Bills:

vs. WR1: 30th —– Julian Edelman vs. Stephon Gilmore

vs. WR2: 23rd —– Chris Hogan vs. Ronald Darby

vs. TE: 12th —– Rob Gronkowski vs. Aaron Williams

vs. RB: 11th —– James White vs. Preston Brown

What’s at stake?

New England’s second division game in four weeks is of course an important game. Winning the first meeting puts less weight on the next meeting. However, as many have pointed out, the team is playing with house money. A win here would provide a huge confidence boost to the team for Tom Brady’s return. However, a 3-1 record with arguably the best QB of all time returning to the team is an incredible place to be. Also, an L here wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. It would take the pressure of 16-0 off of the team, which is not to be underrated.

Early thoughts:

I think it is fair to say NE should be equipped to handle Buffalo. They have had their DB depth tested before this season with the Cardinals and play the matchup game better than anyone else. The only worry is that the Ryan Brothers are able to confuse whatever young QB is under center for the Patriots. Although, NE won’t give Brissett anything confusing to have to decipher on the field so any trickeration on Buffalo’s part might be for naught.

Week 3 Scouting Report: Houston Texans

September 21, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

The Football Gods giveth, and boy can they taketh away. I was almost bored watching Garoppolo decimate the Dolphins defense and play like a seasoned veteran. That’ll teach me to take great QB play for granted (again). Jacoby Brissett was a player I was excited to see play in the preseason because I liked his skill set and his build. I was hoping he might get a little more prep before his first game action, but the NFL is a fickle beast.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Texans aka “The Only Team that Doesn’t Get their Own Color Rush Uniform”

Week 3: vs. Houston Texans (Tickets)

Thursday, September 22,

8:25pm EST, NFL Network

Gillette Stadium, Clear, 60s.

Opponent/Patriots Stats:
Texans: 2-0

Notable Games: Defeated Bears 23-14 and Chiefs 19-12

Common Opponents: None yet.

Recent games vs. Pats: 2015 – Patriots 27-6. 2013 – Patriots 34-31.

Week 2 Scouting Report: Miami Dolphins

September 14, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

WOWAWEA what a finish to that game. I wasn’t that invested in a season opener since the 2009 game against the Bills where Ben Watson made the game winning score. Alas, it is time to turn the page to the next opponent. Something tells me this one won’t be as much of a rip snorter…

Here’s everything you need to know about the Miami Dolphins, aka “The F*****g Phins”

Week 2: vs. Miami Dolphins (Tickets)

Sunday, September 18th,

1pm EST, CBS

Sunny, 70s

Opponent/Patriots Stats:
Dolphins:
Notable Games: In the season opener, The Phins put up a good fight against a vaunted Seahawks team, but Tannehill took a late sack that killed their final drive and an injured Russell Wilson drove for the game winning score.

Common Opponents: None yet.

Recent games vs. Pats: Patriots smoked the Dolphins in Week 8 of 2015, 36-7, but Miami triumphed in Week 17, 20-10.  The last time the Dolphins won this matchup before that was in Week 1 of the 2014 season, 33-20. This game was in Miami (a scorcher in September).

What is the three way tie breaker that lets the Pats have the second seed going into this week? Because we lost to the Ravens head to head shouldn’t they be in control of the second seed?

Right now it’s technically a three way tie with the Ravens, Pats and Broncos so the instead of head to head the tie breaker goes to conference record. The Patriots are 8-1 in conference, the Ravens are 8-2 and the Broncos are 6-2.  Pats fans should be rooting for the Broncos in two weeks against […]
