Why Did Belichick De-Elvis the Hot Jacket?

February 9, 2017 by Mike Dussault

It was quite the banner weekend for PatsPropaganda, even before James White scored the touchdown in overtime to win Super Bowl 51. It all started when old friend Kyle Brandt mentioned my Belichick Hoodie Database on Good Morning Football. Soon after I was being interviewed by USA Today about it, and the day after that I was contacted by ABC News to be interviewed for a national news feature on Belichick’s hoodie.

What everyone of course wanted to know? What Belichick should wear in the Super Bowl. My choice was the 2016 Blue Hoodie, as ABC mentions at the end of their segment. He was 3-0 in it on the season, including the win in Denver and both playoff victories.

All signs pointed to that direction.

The wild card was the Hot Jacket, Belichick’s favorite attire since 2013, going 24-8 in it. The Hot Jacket scared me though. Belichick had worn it in the 2013 AFCCG loss in Denver as well as the first half of the 2015 AFCCG loss, also in Denver.

The climate inside NRG Stadium was an unknown factor. If it was warm, there was little doubt Belichick would probably reach for the Hot Jacket. Still, Belichick wore the 2013 Blue Hoodie Super Bowl 49 in Phoenix, so I remained hopeful Belichick would stick with what was working and go with the 2016 Blue Hoodie.

Well, Belichick did go with the Hot Jacket, however, in a stunning move, the Flying Elvis over his left chest had been removed. W. T. F.?

Why? It’s something I’ll ponder for Patriots eternity. Some theories:

  • We’re going on year four for the workhorse top, maybe it was just falling apart and they just cut it totally off just so it wasn’t that messy. (But when has messy bothered him before?)
  • Was it a statement directed toward the Patriots? That would be the best stupid hot taek and I’m surprised no one has jumped on it yet. This is of course bullshit.
  • Or was Belichick just so sick of the talk of Hoodies and Hot Jackets he just went all blue to eliminate the storyline? I’m too smart for that though, the outline of the logo is still clearly visible.

So now we’re at a crossroads for 2017. The Hot Jacket hasn’t been in production for over a year. Does he have another one? Or will this effectively put the Hot Jacket into retirement as his number two all-time top? Or maybe he’ll just keep rolling with the de-Elvis’ed one?

Typical Belichick. Just when you think you’ve got a bead on him, he zags in a way you never expected.
