Tweets of Note: Patriots Sunday Training Camp Practice

August 12, 2018 by Mike Dussault

Greetings from Philadelphia, where so far I haven’t been too subjected to too much Super Bowl 52 misery. In fact, you’ll be pleased to know that most Eagles fans seem to have returned to the norm, being totally miserable about their opening preseason loss. We’ll see if my Patriots-plated car is still in one piece when I pick it up from the parking garage on Tuesday morning.

Imagine what’ll happen if they lose to the Pats Thursday? Won’t make up for the Super Bowl that’s for sure, but it’s always nice to see Eagles fans miserable and really, it’s their natural state anyway.

There’s only two more training camp practices open to the public left. That means, unfortunately, I won’t get to see them again and will instead have to rely on the great reporters whose job it is to be there in person.

It looks like it was another interesting day of practice after what has become a standard downpour that has affected numerous practices thus far. Here are the Tweets of Note…

A few thoughts on defense from Sunday’s practice: 1. CB Jonathan Jones upping his participation, elevating to top nickel spot; 2. LB Ja’Whaun Bentley getting brief look alongside Dont’a Hightower/Kyle Noy after strong preseason opener; 3. Keionta Davis as interior rusher in sub.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 12, 2018

Plenty to chew on here from Reiss and much of it expected. Jones was the nickel corner for much of last offseason and saw some 41 percent of the snaps at corner last season. Losing his was an underrated problem in the Super Bowl. Now that he’s back he should push rookie Duke Dawson who saw plenty of reps in camp but was mostly missing in action in then preseason opener.

After Bentley stood out so much against the Redskins it shouldn’t be a surprise that he got a look with Hightower and Van Noy, but was it at MLB in place of Roberts? That would be a really significant development, because he was at WLB a bunch in then game. I’m really excited to focus on him even more this week against the Eagles.

Davis has popped up from time to time in camp to me but I never really locked in on him and haven’t had a chance to check out what he did in the game. Again, at this time of year, lots of guys might get some looks with then 1s just see how they fit in. Will be keeping an eye on him even though I think he’s still buried on the depth chart and not really a roster contender.

Marcus Cannon is expected to return from his injury absence in time for the regular season, if not sooner, according to a source.

Good news on Cannon but after last year I’m starting to worry about how durable he is going to be. The Pats would love to have him back in 2016 form, when he was a game changer. Let’s hope it’s nothing significant that will linger.

Much more action for Tom Brady today. Had him down as 15-for-19 in competitive 11-on-11 work. No apparent issues with the back.

While everyone just wants to be so concerned about Brady and how happy and healthy he is, I continue to believe we’re getting the same old Tom for another year.

Isaiah Wynn has some reps at right tackle today with Brady on the field.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 12, 2018

Wynn continues to build his versatility, now appearing at LT, LG and RT. All that’s left is RG and Wynn will have truly solidified the entire line outside of center and who knows, he can probably do that too. Not sure where, but he’ll be starting next year I bet.

No way to know how it all turns out, but #Patriots TE Jacob Hollister gives himself as good a chance as anyone out here to see his role increase in ‘18. Does everything—every drill, every rep—w/ sense of urgency. And in year 2, wins most of his reps. Wasn’t the case a year ago.

— Matt Chatham (@chatham58) August 12, 2018

Can’t wait to see if Hollister actually gets involved in the offense this year or if he’ll just be a forgotten piece like he was last year.

What’s the best way you think is it to attack the buffalo defense? Quick passes and screens? And what about the buffalo offense? Should we stack up against the run and dare them to beat us through the air?

Check out today’s gameplan article for a lot more on this. But generally you do try to use their aggression against them with misdirection and screens, and a quick pace that doesn’t allow them to get into all their disguises. You can’t let them dictate, you must make them react to what you’re doing. Once […]
