Tweets of Note: Patriots Monday Camp Practice

August 13, 2018 by Mike Dussault

I’m winding things down on vacation in Philadelphia today, eager for a long drive back tomorrow and then full preparations for the rest of preseason and the start of the Patriots regular season.

Quick story, I’m here for a hockey coaching seminar during which the speaker asked the room, filled with Eagles SB52 fans all decked out in swag, to name some good coaches. The first, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, and of course a Boston native. Next? Someone from the back, sadly not I, shouted out Bill Belichick. The crowd groaned but begrudgingly acknowledged the coaching ability of the hoodie. No mention of any of the bullshit, just a bunch of coaches admitting they know who one of the best ever is.

I had a big grin, and was slightly sad it was not I who called out the name.

Here are the Tweets from today that stood out.

3 nuggets on D from Monday’s practice: 1. Jason McCourty getting more time at top CB spot opposite Stephon Gilmore; 2. J.C. Jackson INT of Tom Brady on long ball to Phillip Dorsett over middle into triple coverage; 3. LB Ja’Whaun Bentley again with top group at times.

Reiss is making my life easier with these nice compact post-practice tweets. After a slow start in camp and not appearing in the first game, I still think J-Mac is pretty much a lock. Very well could be he’s working back from an injury or something the way they’ve managed him. Sounds like a sloppy day for the receivers and Brady, but I really hope Dorsett isn’t the second coming of Cooks last year where one out of every four deep passes was complete and the other was maybe a PI call. That offense felt so sporadic and slow starting. Hopefully Dorsett proves to be a medium and short threat. Bentley continues to get a look at replacing Elandon Roberts, whose starting job is starting to seem tenuous.

Julian Edelman led the Patriots each of the past two days with 4 connections with Brady in team drills and is looking more like himself of late. Now has 15 catches in camp, one behind Hogan for team lead.

Edelman dinged up his lower leg late today, though. Shook it off a bit.

To be honest, in the practices I saw Edelman looked pretty close to what we’re used to. Yeah he’s had some drops but I don’t share the same concern many seem to have about him, concerns that were seemingly sparked when Edelman called himself out (which I didn’t really buy either).

Brady was frustrated to the point where he retrieved an incomplete pass and punted it into the stands

I love when Brady punts it. Remember 2011 playoffs vs Tebow and it started a brawl?

Credit to Joe Thuney, who puked three times on the field but didn’t miss a snap with the starters.

Yikes, this seems like a good spot to leave off.

I was just in Philly too. Took the ferry over to Camden for 2 PHISH shows. Steamy hot. Boy, the Delaware River leaves something to be desired.

Notes on Taking Care of Business: Patriots Knock Off Lions

One thing you can say about the 2010 Patriots is that they are consistent. Consistently hard to stop on offense, and consistently easy to pass on on offense.  It wasn’t surprising that Detroit jumped out to a 14-3 lead. Nor was it surprising that the Pats came back. It’s becoming pretty apparent that if the […]
