Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp – Padded Practice #2

August 18, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

And just like that, day two of padded practice is in the books. The weather looked good in Foxborough earlier today for the second consecutive media attended practice.

Here are today’s Tweets of Note:

Tough start for Jarrett Stidham today. He’s been intercepted by Michael Jackson, Stephon Gilmore and Kyle Dugger.

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 18, 2020

Jarrett Stidham was intercepted three times. He also had one of the best throws of the day — a sideline laser to Damiere Byrd in 11-on-11 work. Nice timing between QB and WR, with protection holding up. Later, he decisively found Mohamed Sanu up right side in 11-on-11s.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 18, 2020

Another double-tweeter to cover the QB situation from today’s session. Stidham was on the lips of reporters a bunch today because he was picked off three times during the first half of practice. It would be easy to get caught up on the three picks Stidham threw, Mike Reiss summed it up well when acknowledging Stidham also made one of the best throws of the day to Damiere Byrd during 11v11 drills.

Reps were once again split evenly between the trio of Newton, Stidham, and Hoyer. I try not to look into QB stats too much, it’s day two after all. If Stidham starts chucking picks for fun on a consistent basis over the next few weeks, then we can start moving the needle towards Cam for the starting job.

Based on the reports from the last couple of days, I’d still put Stidham and Hoyer in front of Newton purely for their experience in the system, but Cam had a better day and is showing improvement.

Julian Edelman was limited today, leaving the main practice fields shortly after the session started. Will Hastings was also limited. Sony Michel, Lamar Miller, Anfernee Jennings, Jeff Thomas, Beau Allen, and Tashawn Bower were absent. #Patriots.

— Jim McBride (@globejimmcbride) August 18, 2020

Same list as yesterday with just one addition, DL Tashawn Bower was also absent from practice. Nothing reported on Jennings, Allen or Thomas who are still yet to put on pads at this years camp.

Slightly concerning about Edelman being limited today, with 2/14 of the available padded sessions done, it will be vital for the team to ensure they keep Jules healthy, I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one over the next few days, fingers crossed it’s just something minor. Hastings was also limited in the receiving group.

RB’s Sony Michel and Lamar Miller remain on the PUP/active list, the PU crew made the point yesterday that Miller will probably be getting acclimatized to camp shape after not being with the team for offseason fitness schedules.

Mohamed Sanu’s route running continues to stand out head and shoulders above the rest of the #Patriots wideouts. He’s basically teach tape out here for the younger guys.

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) August 18, 2020

This is great to hear, Sanu has always been a naturally gifted route runner, but after his sluggish start with the organization last year, which for the most part he was nursing an injury, this is a nice change of pace.

Devin Ross is really standing out thus far. He made the play of the day, hauling in a deep bomb from Hoyer. Beat Jason McCourty on the play.

— Zack Cox (@zm_cox) August 18, 2020

Another plus for the WR group is the emergence of Devin Ross over the last couple of days. Yesterday he was noted a few times for making plays and showing some “wiggle”.

Depending on how long Edelman and Hastings remain limited, Ross could get even more reps if he can keep making plays.

In today's practice, five offensive players led the way in receptions (during team drills): Devin Asiasi (3), Damiere Byrd (3), Damian Harris (3), Dalton Keene (3) and Jakobi Meyers (3).

Asiasi caught passes from all three QBs

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 18, 2020

Mark Daniels provided some reception numbers from the team drills today, good signs that the TE’s were getting involved in the passing game. Also, Damian Harris’ name has come up a few times across Twitter today, he’s had a few strong sessions on the field and has impressed with his receiving ability as well as his rushing skills.

Jake Bailey landing puts on the one like he’s hitting from the fairway right now. Three or four of them. Putting on a clinic. #Patriots

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) August 18, 2020

Just a quick final one, it’s the first time I saw P Jake Bailey’s name mentioned. Bailey, who had a great rookie year with the team last season, showing pin-point accuracy today. Pro Bowl run this year? #LFG

5. New England* GPA: 3.41 Highest Grade: A (Iyer, Czarnecki, Cole, Davis (4)) Lowest Grade: B- (Kiper, Prisco, Burke) Comments: This grade seems completely based on the Patriots trading up to acquire both Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower in the first round. All four analysts who gave A’s focused almost solely on these two players. […]
