Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#10 8/27

August 27, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Due to some adverse weather around Foxborough, today’s practice was brought forward to a 09:15 start. Pads were back on, refs were in attendance, and one side of the ball still continues to dominate. I present today’s Tweets of Note, along with my thoughts.

Absent on Day 10 of camp: Devin McCourty, Lamar Miller, Cassh Maluia, Will Hastings, Josh Uche, Beau Allen

New: Uche and Maluia

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 27, 2020

LB Cassh Maluia missed his first practice of camp today, along with fellow rookie LB Josh Uche. These guys have been performing well so far, and have real shot at being part of the LB playing group come the regular season, let’s hope they’re back tomorrow.

DT Beau Allen continues to miss practice due to an undisclosed reason, looking almost certain now that the Patriots will be without him for week 1 and beyond.

UDFA Will Hastings missed out again today, hopes all but faded for fans to see the “Auburn connection” rekindled in Foxborough.

RB Lamar Miller remains on the PUP/Active list.

Patriots LG Joe Thuney departed with left hand injury that was obviously painful. TE Asiasi very limited again. RB Harris (left calf) dinged but stayed in. LB Uche out, Jennings got his reps. S Devin McCourty out but watching. D (even 2nd team vs 1s O) again dominated O

— Greg A. Bedard (@GregABedard) August 27, 2020

S Devin McCourty was out of practice for the second day in a row, he reportedly watched from the sidelines with a compression sleeve around his leg. This could just be a precautionary measure, but given it’s the Patriots, we aren’t likely to find out exactly how serious it could be.

LG Joe Thuney was also nursing a hand/arm injury he picked up during practice which will be one to look out for, as Thuney’s position at guard is locked down, they might play it safe with him.

First rep of 11-on-11s: Damien Harris GONE for a long touchdown.

— Doug Kyed (@DougKyed) August 27, 2020

Damien Harris made a statement in the RB competition early on today by rushing for an 80-yard TD during the live 11v11 drills. Now Sony Michel is back in the picture, this battle will only intensify over the coming practices.

If I needed to pick now, I’d go with Harris purely as Michel has only just come off PUP. It’s also easy to forget that Lamar Miller is also waiting in the wings to get on the field for the first time.

And given all the missed time by Patriots safeties — McCourty, Dugger, Phillips all limited for stretches of camp — Terrence Brooks appears to have been the biggest beneficiary thus far. Pick yesterday (almost two). Pick today.

— Phil Perry (@PhilAPerry) August 27, 2020

This grabbed my attention, Perry makes a good point, originally at the beginning of camp, along with the CB position, the S position didn’t cause me a great deal of concern.

Now with players limited and missing, Terrence Brooks has really stepped up to stake a claim within the position, picked Newton off yesterday, and today.

Overall thought from Patriots controlled scrimmage: Defense absolutely crushed the offense. Tons of would-be sacks and incompletions. Defensive players let offense know about it, too. Plenty of trash-talk.

— Ryan Hannable (@RyanHannable) August 27, 2020

Unfortunately, this is becoming a theme, and I say unfortunately because it’s bittersweet. It’s great that the defense is dominating and showing some great things, but we need the offense to step up towards their level, at the minute, they’re not even close.

QB’s staggering again, Newton at times is hot and cold, but he continues to have bright spells that are encouraging. Hoyer made the throw of the day with a dime to WR Devin Ross for a TD.

Unofficial plan for the #Patriots will be a 1pm in-stadium practice on Friday. Sounds like a possible scrimmage.

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) August 27, 2020

Now, this is exciting. As pre-season games aren’t a thing this year, teams will have to use their own rosters to create game-like situations/scenarios. That’s what tomorrow’s practice looks set to be.

Officiating crews were on the training field today assisting in some drills, so add them in along with the session being inside Gillette Stadium, and we have a potential scrimmage!

Now, this is subject to change, but if it goes ahead, I’m hoping for a jam-packed Tweets of Note tomorrow. Stay tuned.
