Patriots Preview: Week 15 vs Miami Dolphins

December 17, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

On Sunday night, the 6-7 New England Patriots travel to Hard Rock Stadium to take on the 8-5 Miami Dolphins.

Date: Sunday, December 20, 2020
Game Time: 13:00 PM EST
Venue: Hard Rock Stadium
Network: CBS
All-time record: Dolphins lead series 56-54 (including playoffs)

How The Patriots Win

Since the Patriots beat the Dolphins in the season opener back in September, Flores has got Miami playing some good football, especially on defense. So let’s look at how they can beat them.

BALL SECURITY PLEASE!- I just want no pick-sixes or fumbles on Sunday. They go one, sometimes two (if they’re lucky) games without giving up turnovers, then fall back and cost themselves, it just kills any chance of victory in the game, especially when the offense can’t pull out comeback wins like the past.

I personally don’t think Miami’s offense has been great, however, I do think the game is more intriguing now Tua is the starting QB. He’s been really safe with the ball so far in his early career- having thrown only one interception. After making Justin Herbert uncomfortable in the scorching the Patriots gave the Chargers a couple of weeks ago, if the defense can do the same thing to Tua on Sunday, it’ll give an ailing Patriots offense a chance.

Run the ball, get it going, and don’t stop. I’ve given up hope that we’ll see a passing performance like the Seahawks/Texans game’s earlier this season, but, the most consistent offensive production has come on the ground. I don’t care if Harris does all the work and Newton pounds it in from the one, just get the points in the red zone.

Special Teams has bailed this team out so many times this season, I think they’ll play a part on Sunday again, further consistency needed.

TSM’s 5 Keys To Victory-
-0 Turnovers
-Pressure Tagovailoa
-Run, Run, Run
-Make red zone chances count
-Special Teams consistency

Patriots Film Review: Defense Edition

December 11, 2018 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots defense was gashed on the ground against the Dolphins, long before the final miracle play. It was another road game where the front seven was pushed around and the secondary was out of sync for some key plays.

I hoped to make this as quick and painless as possible because I knew which play was waiting for me at the end. It went how I thought. It’s just amazing how inconsistent the defense is, from game to game and especially here, from drive to drive.

Pats Posits: Latereally!?

December 10, 2018 by Mike Dussault

Imagine yourself before the final mind-blowing play of the Patriots loss to the Dolphins. The Pats were poised to take a five-point victory and with Kansas City in a tight one with Baltimore, potentially looking at ending the day with the top seed in the AFC.

It wasn’t going to be a perfect victory. The offense, despite resurrecting Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, still had its trouble finishing. And the defense once again had turned into Mr. Hyde for large stretches of the game. Gostkowski misses cost them four points.

Still, until that point the Pats had overcome their continued inconsistencies, which were as drastic within this game as they’ve been between home and away in 2018. The defense got the stops needed and the offense got the points needed. All they needed was to get one last tackle.

Then suddenly, in one play, everything changed.

Where to begin? It’s the kind of loss only the Posits can help me get over.

Patriots Gameplan: Week 14 at Miami Dolphins

December 7, 2018 by Mike Dussault

Patriots Gameplan
Week 17 at Miami Dolphins

Miami and Denver are unquestionably the worst two places for the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady Patriots dynasty. They’ve seen three seasons ended in Denver, while Miami has been their most consistent division road struggle.

In 16 trips to Miami, the BB/TB Pats are 7-9. They had a nice run from 2010-2011 to briefly claim a winning record in South Beach. But since then the Pats managed just one win, a strong season-closing performance by the 2016 squad.

There’s no secret the Pats have been a home-road Jekyll and Hyde this season. The disparity has never felt bigger and now we’re at a critical time of the season. The proving ground.

What do the Pats have to do in Miami to get their second win in three years? Here’s the gameplan.

Pats Posits: Order Restored

October 1, 2018 by Mike Dussault

And just like that the New England Patriots reminded everyone what they seem to forget every single year no matter what — that a well-coached football team can quickly go from looking terrible to dominant when everyone is playing on the same page. The Patriots didn’t suddenly go out and grab a bunch of new more talented players, they just all did their job and the result was a confidence-restoring win over the Dolphins.

The defense didn’t allow a drive over five plays long and forced two turnovers. The offense got Sony Michel going and the positive effects trickled down through the rest of their game, as they converted 10 of 15 third downs and put up a season-high 38 points. It was a total team effort and was beautiful to watch.

Yes, it feels like order has been restored to our lives. The Patriots are not done and with the promise of Josh Gordon, who showed some flashes in 18 snaps with two catches both coming on third downs, along with the return of Julian Edelman, it’s hard to feel anything but good vibes now about this Patriots team and that’s a welcome relief after the last two weeks.

It’s a quick turnaround to face the Colts on Thursday night and there are still areas to improve, but at 2-2 the Pats are still very much in control of their season and showing signs of how high the bar should be set for this team despite what all the critics murdered them for over the past two weeks.

More on that and everything else in the Posits…

Patriots Gameplan: Week 4 vs Miami Dolphins

September 28, 2018 by Mike Dussault

The 1-2 Patriots return to the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium after a two-game road losing streak to face the 3-0 Dolphins. The Pats last left Foxboro looking like a team mostly rejuvenated, especially on defense, but after losses in Jacksonville and Detroit the tide has turned against them. Usually, we should remain even-keeled about what happens in September but a 1-3 start would put the Pats in uncharted territory and behind the eight ball in the division for the first time in forever.

It’s been a long week of buildup as 2017 continues to get drudged up and every former Patriot free agent is now seen as the one who got away and has set the Patriots on course for demise. Still, football is a weird game. You can say the Pats lack talent, but that’s always kind of been the case. They’ve built their dynasty by believing in the system and everyone doing their job. And everyone has not been doing their job.

That’s where we can find hope. That with simply better one-on-one play and tackling things can turn around quickly and a team that looks like it might be falling apart can return to playing winning football.

The Dolphins have a huge opportunity. The Pats are on the ropes and a win for Miami would put them firmly in the driver’s seat in the division, especially since they haven’t won at Gillette since 2008’s wildcat game. They’ve won five times against the Pats in Miami since then which would make the rematch in December all the more exciting no matter what happens between now and then.

Miami has played good football and deserves their 3-0 record, but the Pats have a way of busting out their best football when their backs are against the wall. It’s hard to remember a time when they were more backed into a corner than right now and I’m sure we’ve all been itching to see them get back on the field.

What do the Pats have to do to turn their season around and avoid a disastrous start? Here’s the gameplan.

Film Review: Patriots Third Down Offense

December 13, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots went a mind boggling 0-11 on third down against the Dolphins, a feat they hadn’t accomplished since the dark days of the early 90’s. Without Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, the offense just couldn’t find anyone who could make a key play on the key down.

Let’s go through them one-by-one and see what went wrong and if there are any trends we can discern.

Massey and Thaler have advice for GMs: only suckers trade up. Over those 14 years of drafts, they calculated the outcomes of every possible 2-for-1 trade for a first rounder using the Draft Value Chart, and found “overwhelming evidence that a team would do better in the draft by trading down.” The team that would […]
