Pats Posits: Grind It Out Like We Always Do

December 4, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots systematically strangled the Bills on Sunday, once again leaning on Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead on the ground to take the heat off of Tom Brady. It wasn’t a great 60 minutes, the penalties and sloppiness marred any positive vibes we might’ve had coming off a divisional win.

Now we get to weigh and debate Gronk’s punishment instead of the 10-2 Patriots team that will now play for the division title in Miami on Monday Night Football. Or maybe, if the Bills lose, they’ll already have it. Regardless, the Patriots’ juggernaut roars on and if Gronk has to sit a game (that keeps him away from a certain coach who won’t take his starters out of blowouts ;)) so be it.

As the Patriots’ regular season becomes less consequential with each passing week I’m always amazed how the conversation turns to a pile of bullshit. It becomes less about breaking down the game and more about things like when to take starters out and strength of schedule. Those are the kind of things the pundits will discuss and debate, meanwhile the fact that the Patriots are rolling again despite a bunch of injuries and turnover is just brushed under the rug. Everyone just expects it now, just like I expect to hear talk focusing on questionable minutiae like how good is Bill Belichick really at drafting in the second round. Sigh…

More on all that and the Pats’ 10th win of the season in the Posits.

Patriots Gameplan: Week 13 at Buffalo Bills

December 1, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots are back on the road this weekend, in the middle of playing five-of-six away from the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium. Of course when you’re undefeated on the road and haven’t lost there since late in the 2015 season maybe it isn’t such a bad thing.

The Patriots odds for Sundays game are once again unnervingly high.

This is arguably the toughest divisional game remaining this season. Though the Bills stumbled mightily two weeks ago with a sudden decision to yank Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo got back on track with a solid win over the Patriot-defeating Chiefs in Kansas City. That’s never an easy task. A win over the Patriots would put the Bills back in the playoff contender category and we’ve seen plenty of tight ones in Buffalo to expect a good game.

The Patriots’ biggest opponent in recent weeks has been their own injuries. That’s just where we’re at with this dynasty now. Staying healthy is all that really stands between them and how high their Super Bowl expectations are, and last week they were hit hard again, losing Nate Ebner and Martellus Bennett for the season. Luckily injuries to key cogs Trey Flowers and Kyle Van Noy do not appear to be serious.

Can the Pats keep their 13-game road win streak and seven-game overall win streak intact while putting an iron grip on the AFC East title? Here’s the gameplan to make it happen.

Pats Posits: Systematic Destruction of the Bills

October 31, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Bill Belichick Pirate Halloween GIF

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

The Patriots capped off the first half of their 2016 season with a convincing 41-25 win over the Bills that puts them three games ahead in the division as we sit at Halloween.

Considering Tom Brady‘s suspension, and Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett‘s injuries, it would be hard to ask for better than 7-1, with a commanding lead in the division.

The offense is shaping into the most balanced attack we’ve seen yet. Against Rex Ryan’s defense it was on full display.

The defense had their “bend-don’t-break” moments, but overall it was a fine showing considering the Bills offense was on life support as injuries mounted. But the Pats D has made strides every week on third down and in the red zone, and by the time January comes around they should be peaking.

Now, the bye week, and a chance to take stock of who the 2016 Pats are.

More on that and the systematic destruction of Rex and the Bill in the Posits.

New England Patriots Gameplan: Week 8 at Buffalo Bills

October 28, 2016 by Mike Dussault

It’s been just four short weeks since the Patriots were shut out at home for the first time since the early 90’s by the Buffalo Bills. The game got off to annoying start when the Bills secondary took issue with Jacoby Brissett and Malcolm Mitchell running by their pregame drills and started a pushing contest with Mitchell as Brissett ignored them and continued toward the locker room. Some Patriots coaches got involved and all of it resulted in fines for three Bills’ players.

This wasn’t the Patriots trying to start shit. This was the Bills trying to get in the head of a rookie quarterback then acting like they were just defending their precious warm-up drill, as if two rookies just decided to cut straight through the Bills secondary to send a message.

The Patriots played coy about the pregame incident but Danny Amendola did comment afterwards, “It pissed me off to tell you the truth,” Amendola said. “I’m not going to forget about that. … I just heard they got into it and to be ready to go. I’m always ready to play this team.”

Well, here we go.

The Patriots’ performance in Week 4 was gross. The offense was, well, led by one-thumbed rookie Jacoby Brissett, and alleged provocateur, while Gronk was in his second game working back from a hamstring injury  They also fumbled five times, even though they only lost one.

So we can throw most of that offensive performance out. However, the defense was flat and gave up 378 yards. It was one of those games where almost nothing they did worked and they were on their heels most of the game. They did give up just one touchdown in the first quarter and then three field goals, none in the fourth quarter.

Brady could win with that performance from his defense and they were pretty much terrible. So it has to be better this time, right?

Also uncharacteristic was that the Pats lost both the turnover (-1) and penalty battles (9-74 to 6-60).

Now the stage is set for a meaningful game in an awesome road football environment, with some bad blood already brewing. These are the regular season games you live for.

What the Patriots have to do to redeem themselves and put a stranglehold on the AFC East in the gameplan.

Week 8 Scouting Report: Buffalo Bills

October 26, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

What a busy Tuesday in Pats Nation (or Bill’s Mafia as Doug Kyed penned) yesterday was. The Patriots dealt away TE AJ Derby, my training camp binky, to the Broncos for a 5th round pick in 2017, and traded for Lions LB Kyle Van Noy and a 7th rounder in exchange for a 6th rounder. We won’t get into draft/trade talk here, but just keep in mind BB might not be done wheeling and dealing just yet.

The Bills have slowly turned into a worthy adversary, being the only real contender in the AFC East. Sexy Rexy is notorious for throwing his best at Tom Brady and the Buffalo offense has come to life under an inspired running game. This will be a great challenge for Brady and Co.

Here is everything you need to know about The Buffalo Bills aka, “The Only Team to stop Jacoby Brissett”

Patriots Special Teams Report – Week 4 vs. Buffalo Bills

October 4, 2016 by Sam Hollister

What a disappointing effort by the Patriots Sunday. While it is hard to find silver linings in a shutout beatdown at home by a division rival, I chose to look at the fact the Pats managed to go 3-1 without the greatest quarterback of all time. And hey, special teams played pretty well yesterday, save for a few small plays, so lets get into it.

First, I’d like to give a nod to the tremendous work Matthew Slater and Jonathan Jones have done as gunners on the punt team thus far in the season. The pair shone in a game lacking much of anything positive, continuing their trend of incredibly strong play. While we all know just how good the five-time Pro Bowler Slater is, it is also important to recognize the undrafted rookie Jones, who has yet to receive any snaps at corner, but has had a standout start to his career on special teams. Slater and Jones both beat their men down the field on the first punt, with Slater making an excellent tackle for no gain off Ryan Allen’s 47-yard punt.

In addition, twice Allen’s punts resulted in fair catches by Tate, and both times Tate had Slater and Jones converging on him, allowing no room to run. Tate returned Allen’s third punt for 10 yards, with Slater bringing him down, but Jones was illegally knocked out of bounds on the play, resulting in a 10 yard penalty on Stephen Gilmore that set Buffalo back to its own 10 yard line. The duo has been incredible thus far, consistently beating opponents on the way down the field and not allowing positive returns off punts.

Patriots-Bills Film Review: Defense Edition

October 4, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Yes, it’s time to take a look back at the car crash that happened on Sunday, when the Bills beat the Patriots pretty much across the board. And where else would I start than with the defense?

Now the common refrain I’ve heard over the past couple days is THEY ONLY GAVE UP 16 POINTS!

Well, this is true. And overall the Patriots defense is fourth in the league in points-per-game. That can’t be overlooked and as maddening as the Bend-Don’t-Break can be, it’s a proven game winner.

But from there just about every other defensive stat is bad. Real bad. They’re 29th in 3rd down defense and 28th in red zone defense. We’ll see how far they’ve fallen in DVOA on Tuesday.

So yes, the number of points allowed is certainly an important stat, and when you combine that with how the bad tackling, lack of edge setting, and overall sloppiness should all be corrected and there’s certainly a valid argument to be made that the Patriots defense will be okay.

But don’t ask me to feel good about how they’ve regressed in some of the most important aspects of the game since last year. Hopefully this game was just a stinker they needed to get out of the way.

Let’s take a closer look at the All 22 to get an emotionless look at what went wrong.
