Patriots Tweets Of Note – Training Camp 07/28

July 28, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Football is back! This offseason felt like an eternity following the Draft in late April, but here we are, Training Camp 2021, fans, a rookie QB, bunch of FA signings, let’s check out a bumper edition of Day 1 Tweets of Note!

PatsProp founder Mike D posted his usual pre-practice panoramic picture, calm before the storm, but a great view from the gantry he had today.

Today is the start of New England Patriots training camp, I really don’t miss those days, but it was a lot of fun being around my teammates.. #nofairducking #onlythestrongsurvive pic.twitter.com/8tz5nmWGcP

— Andre Tippett (@AndreTippett) July 28, 2021

One of the greats of yesteryear dropped a note ahead of the first practice of camp today, great to hear from Tipp, what a great photo that is.

Listen to the crowd roar, that’s something. Sure, uncontested open throw and catch didn’t blow me away, but nice to see Mac get some reps in front of a crowd, and great to see fans back having fun.

Also, Gunner looks quick, out of that cut across the backline of the end zone he really turned on the jets.

Nelson Agholor definitely stood out as the best separator among the receiver group so far. Caught two TDs in the most competitive reps. Did a nice job working the back of the end zone. #Patriots

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) July 28, 2021

After a fairly uneventful mini-camp, Agholor got some notice today as Evan Lazar noted a few nice grabs from him as he managed to stand out as the top WR to get space in today’s session.

I’ve heard some say that they’re concerned that he is more of a broken-down play type of receiver, but whilst I agree he has shown in Oakland his capability of having big plays from broken routes, I think he’ll surprise a few people this season and have a productive year. Still early days, but a nice start to the new season for him.

Stephon Gilmore and Chase Winovich are watching the end of practice from the sidelines. Neither are in uniform.

— Alex Barth (@RealAlexBarth) July 28, 2021

No surprises with Gilmore not showing up to physically take part today, Chase Winovich joined him later in the session to watch from the sidelines.

Some other PUP news, Trent Brown and Kyle Van Noy were participants on the field and are no longer on the list.

Cam at times gets a lot of valid criticism about his throwing, but boy, what a dart this was through coverage to find N’Keal Harry at the back of the endzone.

Cam had an up-and-down start to camp, but this was a bright spot for sure as he led today’s reps.

Adrian Phillips just picked Cam Newton off in the end zone on a ball thrown behind Hunter Henry. Terrific diving grab.

— Chris Mason (@ByChrisMason) July 28, 2021

Adrian Phillips was the defender on all reporter’s lips following a fine day of unpadded practice.

Phillips’s name doesn’t always stand out on defense, but he was one of my favorite players last year and I think he still has a ton to give the team this season.

Some nice moments from N'Keal Harry in this latest round of 11-on-11s. Beat Jalen Mills for a diving touchdown catch from Cam Newton and caught another TD from Mac Jones vs. Dee Virgin.

— Zack Cox (@zm_cox) July 28, 2021

Harry put in a great shift today by all accounts and the ball was following him around the field. Hopefully, this can start to put behind the trade request nonsense we saw a few weeks ago, maybe we can see if he still wants to compete for the jersey.

Both QBs had some ups and downs (more detail to come), but one of my biggest takeaways on Day 1 is how quickly the ball comes out of Mac Jones’ hand when he finishes his drop. Decisive.

Cam Newton took all the top QB reps. Jones followed him.

Looks like a good competition.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) July 28, 2021

Mike Reiss summed up day one of QB watch by noting an up and down day for both the former league MVP, and the franchise first-round draft pick.

It’s far too early to take anything from the video and photos emerging from fans in attendance, but Mac kept up with Newton today, and if he can continue to do so I think he wins the job by Week 1.

Jonnu Smith on what it's like being with the #Patriots

"It's really real. You know everything they talk about you know in Foxboro and the love and the energy….Guys are making 1-yard catches and they're (fans) going crazy"@NBC10Boston @RaulNBCBoston pic.twitter.com/DbsrDc8o5a

— Craig Kolodny (@CraigKolodny) July 28, 2021

Love having Jonnu in New England, excited to see what the Bill does in regard to two TE sets and changing up formation like the Gronk/Hernandez early days.

He also seems generally excited and humbled by being on the team.

See you tomorrow, LFG.

Spikes looks like he should be a really good player, and if Hightower also performs up to his potential, it’d be in the Patriots’ best interest to keep Jerod Mayo, Spikes and Hightower on the field as much as possible. Hightower might be versatile enough to play on the strong side in the 4-3, on […]
