Patriots Tweets Of Note – Minicamp Edition – #2

June 15, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Let’s check out all of the Tweets of Note from day 2 of media availability at minicamp.

Patriots defense rules the day.

— INTs for Kyle Dugger (Newton), Dont’a Hightower (Jones) and Kyle Van Noy (Jones, tipped).

— Josh Uche remains a force off the edge and could have picked up three sacks in team drills.

— Jalen Mills got his hands on three passes. pic.twitter.com/bhmDkN25ha

Where the media team has been positioned so far this offseason, coverage of the defense has been sketchy apart from scrimmage parts of the session, and by the sounds of things, it was another strong day for the defense.

Josh Uche’s name has come up a few times this spring, here’s hoping he has a big second-year jump, he could get some great opportunities this season.

Definitely a bit strange to see another Patriots player wearing Gronk’s No. 87. That’s ex-Pats practice squadder Devin Ross, who’s in minicamp on a tryout basis. pic.twitter.com/VkHwR5rd0I

Nope. Don’t like that.

While Jonnu Smith was present, he did not physically participate in drills. At one point, he assisted TE coaches to ensure a drill ran smoothly. During a punt team drill, he went over things on the sideline with TEs coach Nick Caley, a reflection of him staying mentally engaged. https://t.co/zgWlnowVJA

It was a relief to see Smith at practice, albeit he wasn’t involved today as normal, his appearance nods towards the hamstring issue from yesterday not being all that serious, let’s hope he’s back catching balls tomorrow.

Devin Asiasi is quietly having a nice spring. Coaches have been applauding his route detail throughout these practices. Getting open in team as well. Looks like an ascending player. #Patriots

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) June 15, 2021

Someone who’s gone slightly under the radar this spring is Devin Asiasi. The second-year TE had a quiet rookie season, showing a few sparks at the very end of his first year, but today Evan Lazar noted that hew had a good session and that the coaches were taking notice.

With a congested TE group now following free agency, both he and Dalton Keene have to bring it in camp to fight for playing time this season.

Safety Kyle Dugger had a sideline INT in 7-on-7 drills, picking Cam Newton’s downfield throw to Kendrick Bourne. It was a fairly tight window and Bourne reached up for the ball, couldn’t corral it, and it essentially landed between the 2 and 3 on Dugger’s jersey.

One of my favorite Patriots currently on the roster is Kyle Dugger. The second-year safety has received high praise from his teammates in recent weeks, and he’s putting in performances to back it up. He has the ability to fill the void left by Patrick Chung, and I can’t wait to see how he progresses towards Week 1 of the season.

Same five players absent from Patriots minicamp today:

Stephon Gilmore
Chase Winovich
Terez Hall
Byron Cowart
Rashod Berry

Jonnu Smith was present but didn’t take a single rep. Just observed after appearing to tweak his hamstring yesterday.

— Zack Cox (@zm_cox) June 15, 2021

No changes in those missing from yesterday, and the list will probably be the same tomorrow, unless one of the others (excluding Gilmore) attends the final session before the spring break.

It’s still way too early to predict the outcome of the QB battle. Padded practices and preseason will be paramount. But the past week shows me Mac Jones absolutely has a chance to win the job later this summer.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) June 15, 2021

A big increase in reps today for Jones and another bad day for Cam. Jeff Howe notes that he thinks Jones has a chance to win the starting job this summer, an indication of his development so far this spring, and potentially how bad Cam has looked at practice.

It might not be me [replacing Spikes], it might be somebody that nobody would ever expect,” he added, “but I definitely feel like from the point we’re at now, from everybody working out, and the way we’re all working out, and we’re having fun, I definitely feel like that’s not going to be a problem.
