For me, retaining Revis is what matters most. I love McCourty, but having a free safety with range matters a whole lot less if you have a cornerback as good as Revis because they’re only going to have to cover half the field.
There’s certainly a bigger element as far as McCourty’s leadership and losing that would hurt. McCourty also can cover tight ends and do just about anything you can ask of a defensive back…
BUT…
And this is not to minimize McCourty’s talent or impact, but here are some stats to chew on as well:
Since McCourty moved full time to safety in 2012, the Patriots have given up the most 20+ yard passes in the NFL. They gave up the 4th-most 20+ passes in 2014 alone.
And they certainly have struggled vs. tight ends with the exception of 2013.
Again, this isn’t to say that either of these stats are all McCourty, but I think the impact of Revis is pretty clear in the above chart. Or to put it more simply, I think the Patriots defense is better off with Revis and Harmon at FS, than McCourty and Butler/Dennard/Ryan at CB.
At some point you can’t judge your football enjoyment based on how the season ends, because 99% of the time you’re going to be miserable. I lived the ‘07 season and from September until that final Giants’ drive there has yet to be a sports experience that replicates what that was like. There might be another 16-0 team, but it won’t be the kind of rampage like the 2007 Patriots went on.

Patriots add Ray “Bubba” Ventrone as assistant special teams coach
One of the fan favorites from 2006-08 has returned to the Pats to help coach special teams, making him the first former player on Bill Belichick’s staff after a void last season.
This play was one of the biggest of Ventrone’s career, making a great tackle to keep the Giants deep in their territory to start their final drive of Super Bowl 42. Not that it ended up mattering, but at the time, it was a big play.
This is Sportscenter: Stephen Gostkowski
The Pats franchised Gostkowski today, which means a) they’ll retain arguably the best kicker in the game and b) they’re not franchising Devin McCourty and he’ll most likely hit the open market.
Maybe it’s just the Super Bowl afterglow but I’m not even stressing McCourty leaving at this point. Yes, losing him would be a blow and there’s a good chance someone’s going to offer him a lot more money than the Pats are going to but… WE WON THE SUPER BOWL ALALALALALALA!!

Julian Edelman posted these on Twitter, am I crazy or does it look like Dane Fletcher’s got a cast on his right wrist? Ruh-roh…
