Report: Browns Interested in Jimmy G

February 1, 2017 by Mike Dussault

Sources say the Browns’ interest in Garoppolo is real and that they’ll try to trade for him depending on how their draft evaluations go over the next five weeks or so. If the Browns decide to draft Mitch Trubisky or Deshaun Watson in the first round, they’ll be much less likely to pursue the Patriots’ backup — but wouldn’t rule it out.

But they’ll have competition for Garoppolo that will drive up the price. Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan liked him coming out of the draft, and might pursue a deal once he formally becomes the 49ers’ head coach.

The 49ers have the No. 2 pick in the draft, and are also looking for a quarterback.

But the Browns are intrigued, sources say, and they’ll strongly consider it. The cost could be the No. 12 overall pick and more.

As expected, teams are going to line up to get a shot at Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, with the Cleveland Browns leading the way. The Browns have two first round picks and two second round picks, so they have the ammo that the Pats will likely require to part ways with the talented Tom Brady apprentice.

I wrote this a couple months ago, and I haven’t really changed my tune. I know Brady has looked as good as ever this season but the end can come quickly and this is one position you shouldn’t mess around with. You have a player in-house and under contract for another season that can step in and win football games.

Super Bowl LI Scouting Report: The Atlanta Falcons

February 1, 2017 by Adam Magnacca

Here’s everything you need to know about The Atlanta Falcons, aka “The Last Ones Standing”

New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons

Sunday February 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston Texas

6:30 pm EST, FOX

Dome Stadium
Opponent/Patriots Stats:

Falcons: 11-5 (2-0)

Common Opponents:

  • Denver Broncos (Both teams won)
  • Seattle Seahawks (Both teams lost in regular season, Atlanta won in Wild Card Round)
  • Arizona Cardinals (Both teams won)
  • L.A. Rams (Both teams won)
  • San Fransisco 49ers (Both teams won)

History: These teams are not common enemies. As Marcellus Bennett pointed out, Patriots natural predator is the Red Coat, not the Falcon. The last time the teams met, Aqib Talib was balling for the Pats in 2013. The teams have only met 13 times since 1972, making them some of the most unfamiliar opponents New England has had in a while. Patriots lead the series 7-6, and winners of the last 4 meetings, with only one them being played at Gillette Stadium. As of late, the Pats have owned the Falcons, but that’s kinda true about the Pats versus everyone and the Falcons are different this year so read into that what you will.

Tuesday Patriots Super Bowl 10 Pack

January 31, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The Super Bowl circus is in full swing with the “Opening Night” last night kicking off the festivities in Houston. It’s become so much of a production compared to the old days where media availability happened during the day and was far more informal and fun. Still, it’s always good to get a read on the Patriots during these events as we close in on Super Bowl Sunday.

Here’s a 10 pack of thoughts on the latest developments…

Which Hoodie Should Bill Belichick Wear in Super Bowl 51?

January 31, 2017 by Mike Dussault

The time has come to make my final prognostication as to what hoodie (or non-hoodie) Bill Belichick should wear in Super Bowl 51. A quick glance at the graphic above shows what Belichick has worn in his six Super Bowls with the Patriots, with the winning four on top and the losing two on the bottom.

Sorry if the dreaded red brings back some horrible feelings. But what should really jump out at you is that twice BB has cut off the sleeves of his hoodie for a Super Bowl and those two times he lost.

This was especially depressing in Super Bowl 46 because it would be Belichick’s last time in his iconic 2003 Gray Reebok Hoodie with the sleeves cut. This was Belichick’s original hoodie that he made famous and it went out with a whimper.

In Super Bowl 36 he just had a meager windbreaker and he left the sleeves alone. We were still two years away from the first time he would cut the sleeves off and wear it in a game. In 38 it was another windbreaker, but with the sleeves pushed up, not cut. Then came 39 and the sleeves weren’t cut, but they were pegged pretty good.

So the obvious lesson here — THE HOODIE MUST HAVE SLEEVES!!

I’m also going to rule out the Hot Jacket, which is the hardest decision of the Hoodie analysis. The Hot Jacket, which premiered in 2013, has been Belichick’s favorite go-to in recent seasons, going 24-8 overall, including the 2013 win over the Falcons. However he also wore the Hot Jacket in the 2013 AFCCG and the first half of the 2015 AFCCG. So the Hot Jacket is DEFINITELY OUT.

The answer is obvious — the 2016 Blue Hoodie. Belichick is 3-0 in it this season, including both playoff wins so far. He’s also been in blue for three of the four Lombardi-winning games.

The 2016 Blue Hoodie is the perfect one from Belichick to write another huge chapter of his legacy in. Let’s hope he’s listening.

Eats and Activity Recommendations in Houston

January 30, 2017 by Mike Dussault

For those of you lucky enough to be headed to Houston for the Super Bowl (I’m still available if anyone wants to send me!!), it can be tough being in a new city and not being sure where all the fun and food is at, especially if you’re looking outside of the Super Bowl 51 circus which has taken much of the city over.

Thanks to our friends at Obsidian PR, they put together a great list of places to check out this week in Houston! Because let’s face it, the Super Bowl is nothing without great

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium
Flying Saucer offers Houston’s biggest and best craft beer selection in two locations – Downtown Houston (705 Main St) and Sugar Land (15929 City Walk). Travelers should check out:
  • Downtown Saucer
    • Tuesday, 1/31 – trivia
    • Wednesday, 2/1 – Houston flights featuring a sampling of some of the city’s best beer
    • Thursday, 2/2 – tapping a keg of Founders KBS 2016 at 6 p.m.
  • Sugar Land Saucer – $3 Texas drafts all day on Sunday, Feb. 5
  • Food – I suggest the loaded rocket tots (see above!), the Saucer burger or, of course, a beer float for dessert!
Additional recommendations for travelers
  • Food
    • Tex-Mex: Lupe Tortilla
    • Breakfast/brunch: The Breakfast Klub (come early or be prepared to wait…the line often snakes around the building!)
    • Authentic Mexican (no frozen margaritas here…only top-shelf!): Hugo’s
    • Date night: Brenner’s on the Bayou
    • A little exotic (or cheesy): Houston Dairymaids
    • Fresh: Canino Produce Company
  • Attractions worth a visit
    • Art
      • For the artist in all of us: Orange Show Center for Visionary Art (home of the Beer Can House)
      • Menil Collection
      • Museum of Fine Art Houston
      • Art Car Museum
    • For the whole family:
      • Houston Museum of Natural Science (includes the planetarium and butterfly center – and has a location in Sugar Land, as well)

Pats Posits: SB51 Here We Come

January 29, 2017 by Mike Dussault

Bill Belichick Super Bowl 36

Here it is folks, the week we all live for, it’s Super Bowl week.

I spent the weekend getting sucked into more Patriots historical pieces than I expected. First came the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 49. For the first time I was able to watch the Kearse Katch happen again. That moment always brought quick-onset Pats pit in the stomach, until now. Now I’m pretty confident Butler will in fact intercept the ball every time afterwards.

Malcolm Butler flashed not just on the interception, but on multiple plays before that. It was a nice reminder of how well he played that entire season, with plenty of glimpses toward what he would become.

Then came Do Your Job, and I still fast forwarded through the Deflategate bullshit.

Bill Belichick’s A Football Life came next, part one followed immediately by part two. I was amazed how much I’d forgotten, and truly what a disaster the 2009 season was. Every Kraft and Belichick interaction was awkward as ever, while the CaserioBot was still on version 3.1.

I even watched about 38 seconds combined of the Super Bowl 42 and 46 recap shows. Progress.

Combined, it put the Belichick/Brady run in new perspective now as they head toward their seventh together. It was a good week of prep on the Falcons, it will be a big circus this week.

Let’s enjoy every moment of it!

Coffin Corner: (TB)12 Terrible Super Bowl Media Narratives

January 29, 2017 by James Conway

Before we get to the awful early Super Bowl coverage, I have one game-related thing to discuss. Ugh, I know, it’s not about Deflategate. I’m sorry.

If you’ve listened to anyone in the NFL media discuss the actual game, which is really a needle in a haystack at this point. Each of them cites Julio Jones as Atlanta’s chess piece that Belichick and the Patriots defense must take away. But let me throw a stat at you that doesn’t fit that narrative: The Atlanta Falcons are 4-4 when Julio Jones has 100 to (gulp) 300 yards. Their only loss when Julio failed to reach the 100 yard plateau was the first game of the season. To put it another way, the Falcons have won 10 straight games when Julio stays under 100 yards. I’m surprised someone at Elias hasn’t alerted the ESPN talking mouths.

Far more important than Julio for the Falcons has been balance. If they get their other receivers and their backfield going, that is really the gasoline for their offensive engine. That’s why I would focus far more of my energy on taking away Gabriel, Sanu and the dynamic backfield of Freeman and Coleman.

My initial feeling is the Patriots will use the blueprint from the Steelers game from week 1 in 2015. When the Pats put Butler on an island with Antonio Brown and let him get his, but didn’t commit extra resources to stopping him. (Mike D. note – me likey)

He’s got great instincts… he’s a magnet to the ball,” Belichick said during his weekly radio appearance. “He’s got great vision and anticipation, he’s very fast, he’s got good quickness. But I’d say the big thing with him is his instincts. He has a great understanding of what’s happening on the play, where the ball’s […]
