Tight Ends

The history, and future, of the Pats TE position… and picking up that sixth year option

March 6, 2026 by Clare Cooper Leave a Comment

As I sit writing this, on the eve of my five year anniversary of signing at Pats Propaganda, I ponder, is this the Patriots year of TE?

We have recently seen the commencement of the Chinese New Year with the year of the horse… the spirit animal of a traditional tight end perhaps?

Could the stars be aligning for me, as I move into year six of my content creating that finally the Patriots are going to gift me that new TE?!?

Okay, seriously, I know this is not about me at all, but let’s be frank, the Patriots have not appeared to be serious about the dynamic position since Rob Gronkowski retired from the Patriots. (We don’t need to discuss his un-retirement to play with Tom Brady in Tampa, okay?!)

My rebound guy Ryan Izzo was drafted in 2018, but round seven, 250th and unfortunately did not even play his first year, spending the 2018 season on injured reserve.

2019 saw a minefield of ‘ready for retirement’ Ben Watson playing with an injured and kind of journeyman TE of Matt LaCosse, whilst I was still hoping Ryan Izzo wouldn’t break my heart.

The 2020 draft saw a lack of high end athleticism at the TE position, but the Pats had a bash, and double dipped with pick 91 being Devin Asiasi and 101 for Dalton Keene. Unfortunately, this was to be another mismatch and both of these guys were released in 2022, with poor Dalton Keene being limited to only six games due to various injuries plaguing his two seasons.

It finally happened in 2021, Bill Belichick broke my little rebounded heart and traded Ryan Izzo away to the Houston Texans, but he did bring in Hunter Henry from the LA Chargers and Jonnu Smith. Now, whilst many fans were lamenting over Smith’s superb athleticism, my TE gut feelings weren’t as settled. I wasn’t certain it was necessarily the right fit but Hunter Henry ticked my boxes, and I was looking forward to Jonnu proving me wrong. Unfortunately, he did not, and the Pats traded him away in 2023.

The Patriots 2022 53 man roster saw two tight ends as they rolled with Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, not picking up any of the draft available TE’s such as Trey McBride or Isaiah Likely but adding Jalen Wydermyer to the practice squad for a while. Matt Sokol was also brought into the fold claimed off waivers from the LA Chargers, but he hopped around mostly on the practice squad too.

The draft class of 2023 was STACKED and the Patriots were in need… trouble is they were in need of plenty of player positions and some of these guys were going high. Nevertheless there were a glorious glut of names, Sam LaPorta, Dalton Kincaid, Michael Mayer, Tucker Kraft… need I go on? Probably not because I might cry, especially since the Patriots didn’t draft any, they brought in Johnny Lumpkin as an UDFA, only to waiver him in the summer. The Pats did bring in Mike Gesicki, athletic TE from the Miami Dolphins and I was excited. I ignored my little inner voice of ‘but he’s similar to Jonnu’ and ‘he really isn’t a blocker’ and was all in. Gesicki played 17 games, with 10 starts and put up 29 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns, providing a modest red-zone target but failing to replicate his high-production Miami years and so after one season… he gone.

Whatever was a TE loving girl to do?!

2024 wasn’t much for TE’s in the draft other than Brock Bowers so I had finally began to taper my expectations. Good job really as they only picked up Jaheim Bell in the 7th round and as lovely a guy as he was, he didn’t see the field much and was released after the 2025 training camp. The Pats did sign Austin Hooper to a one year deal and the Hooper-Henry tandem was a decent one, not dynamic but definitely a good veteran combination for a young quarterback such as Drake Maye, with Hooper putting up 45 receptions and 3 touchdowns.

Finally, 2025 and the Tyler Warren, Colston Loveland, Mason Taylor et al draft. But the Patriots.. nope. Well, not really. They did sign UDFA CJ Dippre. Dippre was waived on August 26 as part of final roster cuts but joined the practice squad the next day.He was signed to the active roster on November 17. Marshall Lang was picked up for… two days. So, with Jack Westover an official FB, the Pats ran it back with the solid combo of Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper, which I was happy with. Mostly.

And now here we are, 2026, with a draft class that has a sweet spot of the second round for a run of decent tight ends. Top of the pack is definitely Kenyon Sadiq, and he’s going in the first round. With serious athleticism this Oregan TE is probably too rich for the Patriots at 31. But this year, with darling coach Vrabel mentioning how there’s volume at the tight end class, so… you’re saying there’s a chance?!?

And so, whilst trying to steel the marshmallow soft heart I have, perhaps let myself feel again. Maybe.

And so to that end, what are we looking at?

As aforementioned, the stud that is Kenyon Sadiq with his explosive athleticism probably isn’t dropping to the Pats at 31, so I’ve turned my attention to the mid cluster, those that with a little time could be proper starters. The youth and future of the Patriots tight end position, to work and grow with Drake Maye. The future of our franchise baby!

There’s definitely a group of the more athletic, a bit less blocking type TE’s but the 2026 class really has quite a selection to choose from with a lot of potential. Like anything, potential doesn’t guarantee success but there are so many names that I’m keeping my eye on that I feel like I have a box of chocolates selection!

As there were 27 tight ends at the combine alone, with varying amounts of testing, I shall not bore you with an assessment of every single one. I won’t go into the details of some of the more top prospects either, with Max Klare being very high on my list, an athlete with fluidity and a strong route runner, Klare is not a natural blocker and needs work but is expected to be a top-60 selection.

On my radar, possibly further down the draft board (or maybe even not, because these things are truly not a science!) are the likes of Sam Roush, Will Kacmarek and John Michael Gyllenborg.

If I were to admit to a draft crush, which I usually do, I’m a little tied up this year with multiples. Now, let me preface that with the fact that there are quite a few tight ends that I want to look into further, that by the time draft day rolls around I will be crushing on them too, but for now I shall stick with Stanford’s Sam Roush with his 6 foot 6, 267 pound frame as a plug and play in line blocker, and maybe John Michael Gyllenborg, also at 6 foot 6, with a slightly smaller frame of 249 pounds, who ran a good smooth gauntlet and had great execution of the sledge drill with good hips.

That’s not to say I’m cooler on Max Klare, or maybe even the soft handed fluid athlete that is Georgia’s Oscar Delp, it’s just there’s only so many hours in the day that you lovely lot are going to read my TE ramblings, and I have to stop somewhere.

In conclusion, dear Pats Nation, the future may be bright and it may, finally, be full of tight endage!

Go Pats!

Who’s gonna catch the darn ball? A peek at the TE group

August 18, 2025 by Clare Cooper

There are tonnes of discussions in regard to the wide receiver battle, especially around the dynamic looking Efton Chism III, but what about tight ends, and what is the knock on effect of all these tough receiver choices?

Currently, as I write this article, the Patriots have seven tight ends on the roster. They did have one official fullback, but Brock Lampe was placed on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury. By being placed on IR, he will be forced to miss the entire 2025 season, unless he is waived by the Patriots with an injury settlement, and so Josh McDaniels may be looking elsewhere in the tight end room if he wants that proper FB back on his roster.

You all know of veteran Hunter Henry, heading into his fifth season with the Patriots and could quite easily be branded the QB binky with his dependability. Unarguably the TE2 on this roster is Austin Hooper. Another seasoned vet of 10 years in the NFL, heading into his second year on the Patriots.

So that’s TE1 and TE2, what about 3, and dare I say… 4?

We have number 88, 6’2 and 241 pound Jahiem Bell, selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2023 draft. Bell played in 15 games in 2024, a key piece of the special teams unit, which is usually the best way for tight end to get his foot in the door, and finished the season with 2 receptions for 20 yards.

Jack Westover has the high honour of number 87 on his back, and is a name that has been popping up in preseason plenty. Also in his second year, Jack comes in at 6’2 and 245 pounds, played in three games, mostly on special teams in 2024, and is looking like a decent blocker who McDaniels could perhaps turn to as that coveted FB many of us are longing for on the roster sheet. Westover played in 52 career games at the University of Washington, and recorded 46 receptions as a redshirt senior, the fourth most in a single season by a UW tight end.

CJ Dippre sports number 82, and was signed this May as a rookie free agent. CJ played 52 career games with 37 starts and stacked up a total of 65 catches for 782 yards and 3 touchdowns. CJ is definitely a bigger bodied TE in this current group hitting 6’5 and 256 pounds.

Gee Scott Jr was the second tight end rookie free agent the Patriots picked up this year, and the rookie spent five years with Ohio State, converting to tight end after his first year as a wide receiver. Scott comes in at 6’3 and 240 pounds, and presently wears number 80.

Bringing up the rear, so to speak, is a guy that may have flown beneath your radar who sports number 49 (not my favourite when it comes to TE numbers). Previously of the Las Vegas Raiders, Cole Fotheringham only signed with the Pats July 30th, but he has already played plenty of snaps in the recent preseason games. Cole originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Raiders May 2022 out of Utah, and spent his first two seasons (2022-23) on the Raiders practice squad before being elevated for two games late in the season. Fotheringham bounced from Vegas to Houston and Denver in practice squad roles before the 6’4” 245 pounder hit New England this summer.

And because I simply cannot get enough of tight endage, here are the snap counts for the five tight ends vying for those precious roster spots:

With the deadline for roster cut down approaching, it really is all eyes on the pass catchers, whichever type you prefer! Go Pats!

The future is bright! But is it tight? Tight endage that is…

Whilst it’s no secret that the Patriots are in dire need of some wide receiver talent, it appears that my most favoured position may be falling a little under the radar, but is perhaps a sneaky need of address on this Patriots offense.

As we head into the 2025 NFL season the tight ends signed to the Patriots are a touch on the lopsided.

The magnificent Hunter Henry (okay, some mild bias here) signed a three-year $27 million contract extension that takes him up until 2026 as possibly the Pats TE1. So that’s all great and good. He was a binky for Mac Jones and put up career high numbers back in 2021 under Josh McDaniels, and appeared to be a go to for the rookie Drake Maye in 2024 with 66 receptions, 694 yards and 2 touchdowns. Not earth-shattering I’ll grant you, but solid, sturdy, dependable, available… all those buzzwords that aren’t exciting but that I will take in many of my team’s players every day and twice on Sundays.

Seventh round draftee Jaheim Bell is signed through to 2027 and spent virtually all of his rookie season as TE3 behind the aforementioned Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper – more on him later. Bell only registered 2 passes for 20 yards, but as is quite usual for a later round draft pick rookie, he spent the majority of his time on special teams.

Two names you may not be familiar with signed through the 2025 season, are Jack Westover and Giovanni Ricci. Westover, a rookie free agent, arrived on the practice squad in October 2024 and played only three games, mostly on special teams and registered no statistics. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to believe if he sticks around that he will be more of a practice squad addition than much else.

Ricci has a little more substance to his story and brings five NFL seasons experience to the team with 36 games, as well as some whispers of positional flexibility. 6 foot 4, 195 pounds Ricci has lined up as both a tight end and a fullback. There’s the F word that gives some of you tingles, and with the return of the Mc…Daniels, someone who has been known to favour a fullback on his offense, Ricci could be a more flexible TE3 on the active roster.

So, from that we could glean that the Patriots have Mr TE1 in Hunter Henry, and whilst it’s one of those long shot type things, there are two candidates for TE3 in Ricci or Bell. But what about that second tight end needed for all that sexy 12 personnel that McDaniels is going to run? (Okay, okay, that I hope he runs).

It feels that the re-signing/extending of 6 foot 4, 254 pound Austin Hooper should be a no-brainer. A veteran who was a starter-level contributor, Hooper built a good connection with rookie quarterback Drake Maye, and completed the season as one of the Patriots most productive pass catchers; 45 receptions for 476 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The downside in the (possibly) top two guys of Henry and Hooper, is that they are both 30 years old, and whilst I feel ridiculous saying 30 is old, it’s getting up there when it comes to the versatility and physicality of the position of tight end. So, whilst an investment in Hooper is necessary now, in my humble opinion of course, the investment in some youth from a stacked tight end draft this year is also imperative to create that future success the Patriots should now be chasing. Whilst I don’t regret the pickup of the awesome Christian Gonzalez, 2023 was stacked with tight endage and the Patriots missed… all of them.

So, whilst the onus should definitely be upon securing that offensive line, finding that top wide receiver, and making the defense strong again, the future of the tight end should still be on the radar!

Remember the Tight-Ends…

March 20, 2024 by Clare Cooper

I don’t know about you lovely lot but this years draft buildup feels a little different than usual. I guess potentially drafting at three and desperately seeking a quarterback can do that to ya.

So, whilst there is a huge flux, a back and forth of QB at three or trade back and stack, there is a general consensus that the Patriots could do with some tight end talent to develop.

The contract negotiations, and retaining of Hunter Henry was a welcome spot of news to open up free agency, and not just for this particular tight end fan, of that I’m sure.

Henry provides an element of stability, as well as maturity and top 20 tight end talent (according to PFF). With an offence that is in sever flux, bringing back the most successful tight end to grace the Patriots probably since Rob Gronkowski left, Henry did seem like a no-brainer.

Predominately an inline and in the slot guy, Hunter knows his role and has even developed his blocking skill set too. He proved to be a decent security blanket for Mac Jones, with 9 touchdowns in 2021, Hunter potentially can be “the guy” for the next passer of the Patriots.

The signing of previously of the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, the tight end Austin Hooper whilst not flashy, wasn’t too much of a surprise either. The Patriots are lacking in depth and bringing Hooper in is a solid move of security.

Whilst a very similar skill set, and size to Hunter Henry, Hooper is a functioning stalemate blocker rather than a people mover and a prototypical in line option, and so even though this feels like a duplication of the Hunter Henry experience, it provides depth and stability in the case of any injury and the ability to run those 22 and 12 personnel sets that have us oh so tingly (okay that might just be me…).

Spending 72% of his snaps in Cleveland with Alex Van Pelt with his hand in the dirt, Hooper does occasionally flex into the slot and so gives AVP two solid, stable and reliable tight ends that he has familiarity with.

So thats what the Patriots have… fancy a little look at what they could get, when it comes to tight endage?

With the sever needs the Patriots have at quarterback, wide receiver and the offensive line still, the tight end position is more than likely, if addressed, going to be in the later rounds, 4th and 5th most probably.

To that end, the likes of Georgia superstar Brock Bowers and Ja’Tavion Sanders of Texas are too rich and we should just glance longingly and move it right along, and have a look at a small sample of more feasible tight endage for the NEP.

Cade Stover of Ohio State may still be a little bit rich, currently a projected fourth rounder, but this versatile athlete caught my “sharp eye”. He switched between line backer and tight end as a Buckeye and he is a great blocker, something the Patriots could really do with.

A well rounded player with natural athletic ability that showed in the combine. A great job in the sledge pushing exercise and light on his feet, Stover has been top of my tight end wish list since 2023.

Ben Sinnott of Kansas State measured in at 6’4 with quick feet and the ability to speedily change direction. Unfortunately, whilst willing he isn’t the strongest of blockers and we know thats something needed for the Patriots.

Theo Johnson, a mammoth of a man at 6’6 and 264lbs, runs like he is annoyed at the ground (just my unabridged opinion of his 40 run) and had a good sledge exercise performance at the combine. With his size and arm length Johnson is a versatile blocker but his lack of direction change limits his route tree. He is a man built for in line play.

Dallin Holker of Colorado State made a little bit of a slash at the combine with his gauntlet run performance, catching a ball on the move whilst still holding a ball. 6’3 and 235 pounds, Holker has good hands and tracks the ball well. A natural mover he is a little on the smaller side and whilst a sound blocker, he isn’t imposing.

Tip Reiman of Illinois definitely showed up in my notes many times. A late round projection, maybe in the 6th, this tight end had a really good combine performance. At 6’5 and 271 pounds he is a beefy looking guy with a strong lower half. Said to be a mauler in the run game Reiman had a stellar sledge exercise performance, keeping a flat back and great foot work with a smooth gauntlet run and nice hands. A very tight end looking tight end in my book.

On my list since I saw him play last season, Jared Wiley is one of the tallest tight ends to measure in at 6’ 6 1/8 with long arms. A predominantly in line tight end that plays with speed, is willing to get physical with good catch talent. His foot work tends to be rather average and is projected more as a special teamer but there is definitely something to work with, especially with the added positive of his size.

So there you have it, a smorgasbord of tight endage for you. Now, there are plenty of other potential positive prospects at the position, but we do only have so many hours in the day to peruse the subject of tight ends! Do not fear, if the Patriots take a tight end in the draft we shall be bringing you a nice selection of information on that player so just keep those eyes on Pats Propaganda!

Spotlight on touchdown scorer Pharaoh Brown

September 25, 2023 by Clare Cooper

Photo by Al Bello – Getty Images

So, I bet you are wondering who it was who scored that touchdown for the Patriots.

Well Patriots Nation, it was six foot five (or six, dependent upon whose numbers you like best) 246 pounds of, so we have been led to believe, blocking tight end Pharaoh Brown.

Now, I know that when number 86 was running, perhaps a little more like a giraffe than a gazelle, up the field there were a few “eh?” looks on your faces, and to that end (hee hee, see what I did there?) I shall attempt to give you a little background on the top touchdown scoring offensive player for the Patriots against the New Jersey Jets.

Brown was originally signed out of Oregon as an undrafted free agent in 2017 by the then Oakland Raiders. In the six years he has been in the NFL, Brown has suited up for the Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns in 55 regular season games. Brown has had 36 starts and 51 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns, as well as being signed but not played for the Colts. And on Sunday, Brown added a further 71 yards on 2 receptions and a touchdown for the Patriots!

A blocker by everyone’s note, it was probably scheme over route running ability that had Brown running for that touchdown. I mean, as soon as I saw the running style I knew who it was. Brown may not have the fluidity of Mike Gesicki, or the poise of Hunter Henry, but heck he didn’t move bad for a big guy!

For those who like to keep a check, Brown was signed to the Patriots practice squad August 30th 2023, and was elevated to the 53 man roster September 4th 2023. I don’t even think we can attribute the success of Brown in the Bill O’Brien offense to the Houston overlap of Brown and O’Brien as it would have been a really small one, back in 2020.

But here we are, with a Bill O’Brien offense that holds, not one, not two, but three, yes folks, three tight ends. I’ll tell you what, the Patriots might have had a slow start to the season but if my future as a Pats fan is Gesicki, Hunter and now Brown, someone is gonna need to douse me with some cold water! Phew that’s a lot of tight endage potential!

Go Pats!
