Pats Posits: PATRIOTS DEFENSE SUCKSAGEDDON!!!!

November 14, 2016 by Mike Dussault

bill belichick GIFYet again, a Patriots-Seahawks game came down to a final goal-line play, but this time the Patriots fell short, losing 31-24 to Seattle.

With eight lead changes, this was just the kind of thrilling Patriots game we’ve (not) been waiting for. We’re here to see good football games, not just blow everyone out right?

The Seahawks played a clean, tough game and their defense made the one play ours could not. It’s nice to play another NFL team that isn’t in shambles on and off the field.

But hey, big picture: no apparent injuries, a two-game lead in the division and still tied for best record in the AFC (with KC and OAK). I’ll take it.  We’re on to a much-needed road trip to San Francisco as we batten down the hatches and get ready for this week’s PATRIOTS DEFENSE SUCKSAGEDDON!!!!

Here’s the Posits on a defensive dud and yet another near-impossible end-of-game drive (almost) perfectly engineered by Tom Brady…

Pats Posits: Systematic Destruction of the Bills

October 31, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Bill Belichick Pirate Halloween GIF

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

The Patriots capped off the first half of their 2016 season with a convincing 41-25 win over the Bills that puts them three games ahead in the division as we sit at Halloween.

Considering Tom Brady‘s suspension, and Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett‘s injuries, it would be hard to ask for better than 7-1, with a commanding lead in the division.

The offense is shaping into the most balanced attack we’ve seen yet. Against Rex Ryan’s defense it was on full display.

The defense had their “bend-don’t-break” moments, but overall it was a fine showing considering the Bills offense was on life support as injuries mounted. But the Pats D has made strides every week on third down and in the red zone, and by the time January comes around they should be peaking.

Now, the bye week, and a chance to take stock of who the 2016 Pats are.

More on that and the systematic destruction of Rex and the Bill in the Posits.

Pats Posits: You Can’t Complain About a Win in Pittsburgh

October 23, 2016 by Mike Dussault

A win over the Pittsburgh Steelers is a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. It wasn’t pretty at times, but it was an effective win on the road. The Patriots were sloppy, but it didn’t matter. The return of the “Bend-Don’t-Break” defense made sure the lead held up and now the Pats are 6-1, and hold a significant tie breaker in the race for homefield advantage.

Ultimately what matters most is that a) no one left the game with a significant injury, b) you can slow Brady-Gronk down, but it cannot be stopped for 60 minutes, and c) the Patriots now have a two-game lead over the Bills in the AFC East. The defense has, in the words of Mike Lombardi, “issues” but here in late October the Pats are positioned well atop the AFC and have time to iron those issues out.

But yup, the Patriots are running away with this thing early.

More on it all in them Posits…

Pats Posits: Progress and Unstoppability

October 17, 2016 by Mike Dussault

It’s not hard to say this weekend’s Pats Pilgrimage was a success. The Patriots got a win, but more importantly it was a weekend of immense fun with family, friends and my Pats Fan Brethren.

The game itself was a good one to see live. You squirmed just enough before everything turned around with Dont’a Hightower‘s safety sack. Then Brady-Gronk went off and all was well in Patriots Nation.

The Welcome Back Brady Bus was a chance to meet a bunch of awesome Patriot fans from all over the USA, and one fan all the way from Mexico! We gave away a bunch of swag and just happened to park next to a huge tailgate of people with enough food for everybody, including award-winning whoopie pies. Yes, please.

More on the Pilgrimage and a whole lot more on another Gronkilicious and defensively progressive win in the Posits.

Pats Posits: Tuesday Leftovers Edition

October 11, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Things certainly seem back to normal this week. Brady had a vintage Brady performance, all the Jimmy/Jacoby stuff can be put on the backburner (at least by me) until next offseason and the Pats are once again in the driver’s seat in both the conference and the division.

This feels like Belichick/Brady Patriots football!

Here are some leftover tidbits as I cleaned out my Pats notebook and looked back at a few key moments in the game before diving into the All-22 once it becomes available.

— Plenty of digging on how the Pats used Bennett and Gronk going on. Kevin Duffy of Masslive.com had a good breakdown:

Here was Gronkowski’s breakdown by alignment on snaps with Bennett:
In-line: 31
Slot: 8
Wide: 4

And here was Bennett’s:
In-line: 35
Slot: 4
Wide: 4

The Pats rans on 19 of the 30 snaps both tight ends were in-line, but some of their biggest pass plays came out of those kind of sets as well, including Bennett’s 37-yard touchdown. This illustrates the power of having two all-around Y tight ends — they can dictate however they want to. And the play action is going to absolutely devastating this season. And it really boils down to keep them mostly in-line and working from there.

Gronk was double-teamed on 15 of 32 routes. Bennett was double-covered on 8 of 24 routes but not until after his 2nd TD.

Pats Posits: 4-1 and It’s Real Fun

October 9, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Tom Brady is back like he never left. Brady tore up the Browns for his 8th career 400-yard game, with three touchdowns to Martellus Bennett, en route to the Pats 33-13 win over the Browns in Cleveland.

All in the Patriots Universe is right.

Now, with Deflategate firmly in the rearview mirror (I pray…) the Patriots are ready to move on in pursuit of their fifth Super Bowl. Their offense looks primed to take them there. Their defense shut down Cleveland’s ground game and gave up just two scoring drives.

All three phases have things to clean up, but make no mistake, the 2016 Patriots are on track now and the season is very much underway.

Here da’ Posits…

Pats Posits: We’re On to Tom Brady

October 2, 2016 by Mike Dussault

tom bradyAnd that’s a wrap on Deflategate.

Tom Brady is back Patriots fans, just as the dreaded thoughts of “the end” were starting to seep into our consciousness, here comes TB12 to (we hope) the rescue.

The Patriots laid a goose egg on the scoreboard and on the field against the Bills, losing 16-0. For every bit they looked flawless against the Texans, they looked equally flawed against the Rex and Rob Ryan Wonder Twins.

But it was just another example of how even when the Pats get dominated, they never really get blown out.

Jacoby Brissett looked very much like an overwhelmed rookie and the offense was shut out at home for the first time since Drew Bledsoe‘s 1993 rookie season.

Fine. Whatever. Now Brady’s back, Gronk is getting healthier and this Garopposset Offense will soon be long forgotten as a footnote to the 2016 season.

But the defense was lit up for almost 400 yards and didn’t calm any nerves I had this week about how inconsistent they’ve been. They were terrible on third down. Allowed the Bills 36 minutes of possession. Why have they been so up-and-down in the first quarter of the season?

More on that and everything else in a “First Loss of the Season” edition of the Posits…
