BREAKING – Patriots agree 3-year extension with safety Adrian Phillips

January 1, 2022 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

The Patriots have re-signed safety Adrian Phillips to a 3-year extension worth a maximum of $14.25m, per Adam Schefter.

Patriots and safety Adrian Phillips have agreed to terms on a 3-year extension worth $12.75 million and a max value of $14.25 million, including $7.25 million guaranteed, per source, as @caplannfl also reported.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 1, 2022

I think this is an excellent move by the team. The defense is going to lose a bunch of veterans this off-season, some may retire, but many will leave in free agency. Phillips has been one of the best players on defense since he arrived in 2020, and at 29, he should still be at his best for the length of his new deal.

Mike Reiss also chimed in with a quote he recalled Bill making not so long ago about how Phillips always does the right thing, likening him to Patrick Chung:

Bill Belichick on Adrian Phillips (from 11/22): “He almost always does the right thing, kind of like (Patrick) Chung.” pic.twitter.com/fxNYZu3dad

BREAKING – Patriots working to bring back LB Jamie Collins

October 5, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Well, it looks as if there is a Boogeymen reunion on the cards after all. Multiple reports coming in this afternoon that the Patriots are working to re-sign Jamie Collins for a third stint with the team.

A reunion in the making: the Patriots are working towards a deal with free agent LB Jamie Collins to bring him back for his third stint with the team, per source.

Collins should be able to contribute right away given his familiarity with the system.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) October 5, 2021

Collins had left in free agency at the end of the 2019 season and signed a 3-year $30m deal with the Detroit Lions. However, that soon ended as he was shopped by new HC Dan Campbell for a potential trade, before being released last week.

I’m kinda neutral on this move if it’s confirmed, I don’t think the linebacker position is my biggest concern, but, Collins as Field Yates said above, Collins knows the system and has proven chemistry with Van Noy and Hightower. Not a bad addition, probably be a one-year deal also which suits the team.

Patriots RB James White to miss the remainder of the 2021 season through injury

September 29, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

Boy, this is gutting. Per reports, James White’s hip injury that he sustained against New Orleans last Sunday will end his 2021 season.

After further medical examinations this week, Patriots’ RB James White’s hip injury is expected to end his 2021 season, per @FieldYates and me.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 29, 2021

White suffered a hip subluxation on Sunday following an awkward landing after being tackled. For reference, Ryan Fitzpatrick had a similar injury and he may return this year, but, my thoughts are that White will perhaps want to fully rehab to try and play another year or two before retiring.

Unfortunately fits what we posted in game. Expect IR with potential for late season return. See the end of #ProFootballDocPodcast posting soon where we compare #JamesWhite #FitzMagic and #Tua (worst one) with similar hip injuries. https://t.co/PFyMXr4kZJ

— David J. Chao – ProFootballDoc (@ProFootballDoc) September 27, 2021

This is so gutting, White is one of my all-time favorite Patriots, I really fear his career may be over, but let’s see how his recovery goes. Life is cruel sometimes.

BREAKING – Patriots cut QB Cam Newton

August 31, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Credit: Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Wow oh wow. Mac Jones has won the quarterback competition in New England as the Patriots have released Cam Newton.

BREAKING NEWS: The #Patriots have released Cam Newton. Mac Jones is the starting QB in New England. https://t.co/3qE1qu6xqC

— Jim McBride (@globejimmcbride) August 31, 2021

I honestly did not see this coming, I’m shocked. The way a final couple of preseason games went indicated that Cam was the starter and would get the nod to begin the 2021 season, but how wrong was I?!

A couple of things to note here. Firstly, Mac has done enough to show Bill he can be capable of running the offense in the regular season. And second, Cam’s issue with having to isolate may have played a big role moving forward as he was unvaccinated.

Now, this isn’t about if it’s right or wrong to get the vaccine, but the team may have felt it would have put them in a detrimental position if Newton had to isolate with no prior notice before a game during the regular season.

Mac Jones will be the team’s starter in Week 1 against Miami. The first time a rookie has been named starter since Drew Bledsoe in 1993.

BREAKING – Patriots trade RB Sony Michel to the LA Rams

August 25, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

(AP Photo/Steven Senne)

Some news this morning as you wake up, former first-round pick Sony Michel is heading to LA for two late conditional draft picks (that can turn into a single fourth-rounder).

Patriots are trading RB Sony Michel to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two late-round conditional draft picks, per sources.

New England gets back two picks, the Rams get needed talent and depth at running back.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 25, 2021

Not a big surprise here for me, given the buzz around the team’s depth at the position, and with Michel in the final year of his rookie deal, the Patriots clear off some space and get some future picks in return.

Michel never really reached the heights of his drafting position, unlike college team-mate Nick Chubb, who was drafted a whole round later than Michel and has become a franchise player for Cleveland.

The #Rams currently don’t have a fourth rounder. But it’s likely they get one with S John Johnson leaving in free agency. So the late picks serve as a place holder for the real compensation — which is a fourth round comp pick. https://t.co/ZXG0KUKgPj

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 25, 2021

Rapsheet gives an update on compensation here, stating that the fifth and six round conditional picks will likely become a fourth-rounder in due time, a fair trade in my opinion.

My new Patriots salary cap space number after the Sony Michel trade and moving Marcus Martin to IR is $11,645,475 – a $477,731 increase from my last update.

Here’s the cap update from Miguel at @Patscap as always.

BREAKING – Patriots TE Dalton Keene placed on IR, will miss 2021 season

August 7, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Credit: Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

It’s a bad day for injuries. Following the news earlier that Raekwon McMillan had torn his ACL, Dalton Keene has been placed on the injured reserve list following a procedure on his knee to repair an issue he dealt with previously in College.

With TE Dalton Keene being placed on injured reserve at this time on the NFL calendar, it means he is ineligible to play this season (unless he is released with an injury settlement, and later returns, which seems unlikely). https://t.co/aJqcmrN5Kn

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 7, 2021

It’s reported that Keene will have plenty of time to recover for the 2022 season, and really, the small silver lining here is that he will be protected for the season on the IR list as he wasn’t a sure-fire lock for the roster due to the arrivals in the TE group this year.

Mike Reiss notes that Keene joins McMillan in being placed on IR, effectively ending their season.

Some good news regarding tight ends did surface this evening also, Devin Asiasi was activated from the COVID list, we should see him back at practice tomorrow.

Here’s what the TE room looks like currently:

BREAKING – Patriots LB Raekwon McMillan out for the season with ACL tear

August 7, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

As first reported by Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, LB Raekwon McMillan is out for the season with a suspected ACL tear. Awful news for McMillan, who suffered the same injury back in 2017 during his rookie season with Miami.

#Patriots LB Raekwon McMillan suffered a torn ACL during a recent practice and is out for the season, per me and @TomPelissero. He was absent from yesterday’s practice. This is the second torn ACL for the former #Dolphins 2nd round pick, but this time on the other knee.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 7, 2021

This injury comes at a time when McMillan, who only joined in free agency, was just starting to have some good practices over the last few days of Training Camp. A cruel, cruel game football can be sometimes. Well wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

With Raekwon McMillan out for the season, the #Patriots are bringing back an old friend: They’re expected to re-sign LB Cassh Maluia, source said. The sixth-round pick in 2020 played in nine games as a rookie, but was cut in March after New England signed McMillan.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 7, 2021

Just as quickly as the news about the injury broke, Pelissero delivered the news that the team’s sixth-round pick from last year’s draft, Cassh Maluia was returning to the team, following his released this off-season.

Here’s a look at the current LB depth on the roster:
