Patriots release DE Derek Rivers

November 21, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

First reported by Jeff Howe, the Patriots have informed Derek Rivers that he’s being released. Rivers has had a disappointing time in New England following a number of injury-plagued years with the team.

Michel missed six games with a quad injury.

Rivers, a 2017 third-round pick, had 1.5 sacks, 3 QB hits, a pressure and 3 drawn penalties this season.

Froholdt, a 2019 fourth-rounder, was a top backup in camp but had since fallen down the depth chart. https://t.co/2oiyjX9zh0

The Pats also released OT Hjalte Froholdt today whilst activating RB Sony Michel from the injured reserve. The consensus on social media is that Rivers and Froholdt could both return on the practice squad, Rivers would have to clear waivers first.

I’m not too surprised by this in all honesty, Rivers’ play time had reduced a bunch in the last few weeks, think we have better options moving forward.

Nothing gets me more hot and bothered than a defensive depth chart and I always love how Greg Bedard puts his together. It’s not one of those run of the mill/paint by numbers/3-4 defense ones. Interesting things to point out here is Ninkovich’s move to left end. I’m sure he’ll be standing up sometimes, but […]
