Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links-2/4 (Super Bowl 51)

Forgive them, Tom, because they know not what they do.

That is the guy the NFL framed and vilified. That guy right there. Can you imagine how much hate he might elicit if he was actually the monster everyone seems to think he is? I don’t know if I could. I also don’t know if I can quantify in words his mental toughness. As frustrated and exasperated as he must have been with his name and image dragged through the mud over the last two seasons by vindictive owners and an empty suit commissioner, we found out this week he had more important things on his mind: the health of his mother.

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links-1/28 (Super Bowl Bye Week Edition)

tom brady meme

And we’re onto Houston. What a win, what a week. Let’s get right to it and kick off with Bill Speros (Boston Herald) AKA “Obnoxious Boston Fan” on Twitter, who says a simple win means more than any revenge talk for Tom Brady:

Brady just wants to win. That is enough. He was angry long before Deflategate. He grew up in a home with three older sisters and probably needed an Airbnb reservation just to use the bathroom. He was the seventh-string quarterback when he enrolled at Michigan. He was taken with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL draft. John Madden told him to take a knee. He only wins because he cheats. You get the point.

You’d be hard to find a better story than Tom Brady’s. Straight out of a movie script. Underdog. Cinderella. You name it. His entire career. From his very first moment as a Patriot when he told Robert Kraft, “I’m the best decision you’ve ever made,” to last Sunday when you could tell by the look in his eye he was going to eviscerate every last Steeler from the Rooneys to the idiot waving his terrible towel in the stands. He’s always had that “it” factor. This time around though, OBF, it does seem to have a little extra spice to it. I wonder why…

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links-1/21 (Conference Championship Edition)

January 21, 2017 by Nikolas Davos

And then there were 4. After an impressive performance by Matty Ice and the Falcons, an ugly but decisive win for our Pats, a brilliant outing for Rodgers and the Pack, and a road W in a hostile environment for the Steelers, the semi-final participants have been set. But before we get into Sunday Night’s showdown, let’s rewind to last Saturday and some (as expected) anti-Patriots ‘rhetoric’. Phil Perry (CSN) breaks down the nights of Earl Thomas and Ray Lewis on social media during Pats vs. Texans. For example, this is straight from the twitter account of the aforementioned Thomas:

Earl Thomas ✔@Earl_Thomas:
“Tom Brady has the easiest route… put his ass in our division and see what he does!!! #salty!!”

Earl Thomas ✔@Earl_Thomas
“Did you watch the game this year I owned Tom Brady!! That BS you showing I was hurt trying to help my team.”

Just more fuel to the fire. As you’d expect, when asked, Brady said he loved Earl and wished him well in recovery. Straight class, through and through. Brady is too focused and too determined to comment on Earl Thomas’ temper tantrums after two beers and a Percocet. I honestly thought he was retired.

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links -1/14 (Divisional Playoffs Edition)

January 14, 2017 by Nikolas Davos

“You come to Foxboro, it’s gonna be snowing, it’s gonna be cold. Come on in here. We still play, and we win. That’s what we do.”- Teddy Bruschi

The road to Houston starts with the Texans and goes through route 1 tonight. Brockstar and the band are in town looking for an encore after beating up on the bruised and battered Raiders last weekend. With a comical and outlandish 16 point spread, it’s clear who Vegas likes in this one. Matt Dolloff (CBS Boston Contributor) sides with the house, stating:

There are more than enough former Patriots on the Texans staff to understand how tough of a game Saturday will be, but way too many for them to foster the kind distaste for New England that’s needed to have a chance at pulling the upset at Gillette. The same reason that O’Brien won’t get enough out of his team on Saturday is the same reason Belichick will be calling off the dogs by the end of the third quarter.

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links-1/7

January 7, 2017 by Nikolas Davos

WOW! I cannot wait to go to sleep! I’ll take one for every night of the week. Between this and the $50 bags of peanuts, take my money Tom! Take it all! I’d knowingly buy water from this guy if he told me it was wine. Just brilliant. When he retires in 20-whatever I’m sure he’ll keep finding ways like this to pay the bills.

Let’s kick off the bye week links with a couple Globe pieces. First, Trollin’ Volin recaps the Pats beatdown of the Dolphins and labels it a microcosm of the season. Ben writes:

The Patriots offense isn’t as dynamic without Rob Gronkowski, but it still does a good job of keeping the chains moving and picking up positive yardage…the defense still came up big when it needed to. The Patriots have shown a knack for making timely plays this season, and that happened again Sunday.

He’s right. Great overall effort on Sunday and it started from the opening kick. That first drive especially was just such a thing of beauty. Alternating run and pass, a true surgical dissection of a home team and deflation of their home crowd. You just knew from that point moving forward that the Pats were locked in offensively. The D loosened their grip a bit, seemingly given the score, but were able to shut the door when it mattered. The Patriots combined to beat the Jets and Dolphins by a score of 76-17 over the final two weeks of the season. Peaking at the right time, it’s going to be awfully difficult for a visiting AFC club to come in and pull an upset. Especially given the forgiving seeding.

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links- 12/31

December 31, 2016 by Nikolas Davos

First off, a moment of silence for the coaching career of one Rex Ryan…

Thank you. Good night, sweet prince. And good luck on your next endeavor, hopefully on television for all of our sakes. No fear though, NFL Network, your new employee does NOT plan on kissing Bill Belichick’s rings, just in case you thought otherwise. Let’s take a moment and look back on some of the good times with Rex with the help of former WEEI writer, Chris Price:

September of 2015 he didn’t know who Dion Lewis was: It’s the kid that’s playing quarterback. That’ll make it a lot easier to be a running back…So that’s what makes them — I don’t care, put anybody back there. You can do good there. All right? Nah, I mean they’re decent backs in their own right. But I don’t think we’re gonna focus on that kid. I can’t even tell you that kid’s name. But you’re gonna focus on the guy throwing the ball, I’ll tell you that much.

Annnnnnnnd we know how that ended. The guy could just never help himself. At best, the lovable loser, at worst, the abomidable baffoon. I, for one, enjoyed his schtick. It always resulted in a fun week and more times than not, an entertaining football game. Plus, he’d certainly be an upgrade over most of the weathermen on these sport networks nowadays, but I digress…

Best/Worst in Weekly Patriots Links-12/24

December 24, 2016 by Nikolas Davos

“Just ’cause you got the monkey off your back doesn’t mean the circus has left town.”

Bye Bye Denver. See you next year. (Roughly) Same time, same place. Mile High demons are officially exorcised. Between last season’s regular season collapse, and the thorough beatdown (see above) at the hands of that Bronco defense in Denver for the AFC title, this “monkey” was real and needed to be conquered. That being said, the job is not done. Far from it. The road to the Super Bowl must run through route 1 and the Pats are in control of their own destiny. Before we move along that road, let’s talk about last Sunday afternoon.

I love being on the team with Brandon Spikes. What he does for our defense, and creating fumbles and really the hard-hitting presence that he is in the middle of the field,” Brady said today on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan. “Brandon brings that physical element. To knock the ball off (C.J.) Spiller like he did […]
