Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#12 8/30

August 30, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Turns out I was wrong about Friday being the final open media practice of camp, reporters clambered into the training facility one final time today. So, for the second time, here are the final Tweets of Note from camp.

Final day of training camp: Chase Winovich is absent for the second consecutive practice. Michael Jackson, Beau Allen and Lamar Miller also out.

Devin McCourty and Cassh Maluia are back.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 30, 2020

DE Chase Winovich missed his second straight practice today (not overly concerned, no official word regarding his absence), CB Michael Jackson was also missing. A positive on Friday was the appearance of DT Beau Allen for the first time this Training Camp, which was short-lived as Allen was missing again today.

RB Lamar Miller remains on the PUP/active list. – Potential cut candidate?

Devin Asiasi had a lot of side work with the quarterbacks today. If he stays healthy, it would surprise me if he’s not the Patriots leading receiving tight end this season

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 30, 2020

The rookie TE paring has been making steady gains through-out camp, good work from Asiasi again today who is staking a claim to be at the top of the depth chart. Ryan Izzo may have something to say about that given his experience in the system, but pleasing progress for sure.

Patriots kicker competition update:

Nick Folk just went 4-4.

Justin Rohrwasser was 2-5 with a potential block.

— Doug Kyed (@DougKyed) August 30, 2020

Today, I think the final nail was hammered in for the chances of fifth-round pick Justin Rohrwasser being the kicker for the Patriots this year. It was reported that Rohrwasser had been playing with an injury midway through camp , which covers up some of his complacency, but since Nick Folk has come in, it’s difficult to argue against the stats.

Field goal competition in camp over the last five practices- @MarkDanielsPJ

Folk 18/21 (86%)
Rohrwasser 12/22 (55%)

Harry again sat out a QBs side session with Mohamed Sanu, James White, Sony Michel, Devin Asiasi and Jakobi Meyers during a punt return period. He didn't return punts, but he's now on for two reps of punt block.

Curious.

Again, just as N’Keal Harry begins to build momentum, another bump appears in the road, doesn’t sound anything too serious, but we can’t afford for him to start accumulating injuries again.

Transition to safety is on for Joejuan Williams. He'll be in the mix for snaps in the Chung role guarding TEs, playing in the slot/box. Don't expect he'll play deep safety, but maybe some split-safety zones. Don't think we'll see him at outside CB for awhile. #Patriots

— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) August 30, 2020

Evan Lazar points out some positional battles and changes within the defense, also a note on the development of CB Joejuan Williams who’s continuing to transition to S to offer support for the position in the absence of Patrick Chung.

Cam Newton has a much quicker trigger today than he has most of training camp, albeit while facing the Pats' scout-team defense.

— Andrew Callahan (@_AndrewCallahan) August 30, 2020

More improvements from Cam, a sign that he’s becoming more and more comfortable within the system. Another note from a couple of reporters was the connection between Newton and Sanu today, and over the past few sessions.

Although the QB race is all but over, I still feel that all 3 QB’s will have a role to play this season, especially Brian Hoyer in a backup/mentor role to both Cam and Stidham.

As camp draws to a close, it’s certainly been a different experience, cut day next Saturday, Week 1 against Miami is just two weeks away.
